For anyone who gives the matter ser- ious thought, however, the state- ment does not seem exaggerated. Yet the men who claim to speak and act in the name oi Germany. Italy and Russia, all clamcrouslv assert that tire , too, stand for a civilization-a ‘ ultur’ as the Ger"- mans call it-incompnrably sup- eriol" to the efiete, outlived civiliz- ation or moribund democratic peo- pl-es. whose demise they express themselves ready to accelerate, and at whose funeral they would gladly act as undertakers.

“What then is civilization‘? What. at least, is this civilization for which we are fighting, and which we trope to enjoy long after its rivals will be remembered only as so many ugly, and for the nio- ment, highly alarming night- mares?
