BERLIN, May "L-The baffling problem of Therese Neumann, "The Miracle of Konnersreuth," has again come before the law courts.

The reader may be reminded that this simple Bavarian peasant girl re- produces at frequent and regular in- tervals the ‘bleeding stigrnata. (wounds) of Christ-as has been ir- refragably testified by scores oi scientific witnesses who, nevertheless, deny the supernatural character oi the phenomena. It is fortunate that. the yellow flowers give warning as they appear among the springing grain, for when the area is small hand-pulling may be resorted to with fair results. There are, however, always a. number of mustard plants which, elude the weeder; small little fellows which are perhaps a couple of inches high. and blooming late, pIOdliCd seed enough to pollute the ground in fut- uro years.

Substitute for Cultivation

Market gardeners who grow flow- ers and vegetables in commercial quantities often use a mulch in the place of cultivation, particularly among those plants and bushes, such as ‘Tomatoes. Raspberries and Straw- berries, about which it is very diffi- cult to hoe. The small gardener can also use this system. especially dur- ing the early Summer when he may be away on holidays and his garden would be negiecied. A mulch is made of- chopped straw. lawn clippings. leaves. or any vegetable refuse cut up fairly fine and spread over the

a depth of four to six inches. This mulch will keep down weeds and will conserve moisture. Of course it should not be laid down until the plants are fairly well grown, nor be- fore the soil between the plants has been thoroughly cleaned of weeds and- cultivated.

Care of the Soil

Serious harm will result if one rushes the. season and gets into the garden too early. On clay soil partic- ularly there is grave danger of pud- diing the earih and causing it to bake. The Compost Heap

All good gardeners carefully collect grass clippings, alt-eds. garden refuse. piling the some in some corner of the yard. where, help- ed by a layer of soil and a. little wat- ering, this waste gradually turns into n. heap of valuable humus. In the small garden at least. ‘the pile al- ways nppears unsightly. but this can be avoided if a few surplus dahlia bulbs, and some seed of Bachelor Buttons and trailing plants are in- cluded in the heap. The bulk of the refuse is collected in early Spring. so that any late additions will not ser- iously handicap these flowers. which should make a brave show from the middle oi’ July until frost.

EARLY CARE OF TI-IE CHICKS

(Experimental Farms Nate)

The Experimental Station, Kent- ville, N. S.. is using as a brooder house a shed-roof laying house, l6 feet by 32 feet, divided at the centre, with a coal-burning broodcr stove in each hall. This house has a cement floor, with two inches of sand spread over it for litter. A small-mash chick- en wire two feet high is placed around the brooder stove about three feet from the hovel"; this prevents the chicks from wandering too far from the source oi heat. when the chicks are ten days old this wire may be moved back to the walls of the house and used to round off the corners, which are often sources of danger when the chicks crowd into them. The broodcr stoves should be regulat- ed to 100 degrees Fahr. several days before they are to be used. The room temperature should be maintained around ‘l0 degrees the first ten days, and then gradually reduced by open- lng the curtains. The curtains at first are opened up ior an hour or two on warm sunny days, and gradually al- lowed to remain open all day. There are two advantages obtained by open- ing the curtains: plenty oi direct sun- light, and plenty of fresh air.

The chicks are removed from the incubator on the morning of the sec- ond day after the hatch is off, and are placed around the brooder stove, 300 to 350 chicks to a stove. The chicks ‘ are given warm water to drink, and i spend the morning pizking up the‘ small bits of gravel which they re-l

The Protein to Be Found Gelatin

A great teacher once said to her: class in dietetics: "The great task of the housewife in summer is to keep the protein molecule right side up." Because she does not there are “sum- mer complaints." ptomaine poisonings. etc. Therefore, this is a good season to begin thinking about the matter. but really the reason I am taking it up at this minute is because doctors seem to be getting after the almost pure protein products called gela- tins, and their patients are in turn getting after me. Of course my quar- rel with the dcctors is that so often they prescribe foods, and forget that they have to be cooked and manipu- lated.

One letter of a number received mentions two gelatin products, one of which must be almost pure gelatin in

filled at least three times daily. In the afternoon dry mash is placed be- fore the chicks in low hoppers. These hoppers are easily made by taking an ordinary board about 6 inches by l5 inches for the bottom. and nailing sides and ends to it. A small frame is made to fit inside these hoppers. and is covered with small mesh chicken wire. When placed over the mash this wire prevents the chicks from scratching in and wasting the feed. A wet mash is given after the chicks are three days old. made by mixing with dry mash two hard-boll- ed infertile eggs and four table- spoonfuis of cod liver old for every 100 chicks. Green feed in some form must be supplied daily, and sprouted oats are used until clover is available. The scratch-grain feeding is started after the chicks are two weeks old. and in the evening, at the rate of one pound to 100 chicks. The . amount of scratch grain is gradually increased as the chicks get older. The chicks are removed to colony houses at six to eight weeks of age, and are given free range for the summer.

The following is a good mesh feed: 100 pounds each of bran. middlings. oat meal. and cornmeal, 25 pounds of beef meal or Fasterfat fish meal. 25 pounds of bone meal. 2 pounds of salt and 6 pounds of charcoal.
