The coal mining town's prob- ‘ lems started in the fall of 1956 when an explosion ripped the Cumberland Coal and Railway 0. 4 colliery, claiming 39 lives. The mine was closed. Late 1957 a $1,500,000 fire wiped out part of the business section and in 1958 an earth tremor caused an underground uph'ea‘ val in No. 2 colliery that even- tually resulted in 75 deaths and closed the mine.
