Tae London Times gives a list of the comparative consumption of alcholic liquors in the different nations of Europe. It shows that whatever may be the cause of certain nations being addicted to the excessive use of intoxi- cating liquors, it cannot be cold, for the inhabitants of some very cold countries areamong the most moderate. Nor can it be from race,for some of the Teutonic races are the most abstemious, while others, as regards intoxicating liquors, are among the most. self-io- dulgent and embruted.

S» Canada ought to yield to Norway the place of honour in the above list, and to rank between Norway andthe United States as a spirit drinking country, while standing at the head of the list as the smallest consumer of wines and beer.

Farmers and Traders. Avriculture is important enough to require all the talent and ability of any individual, no matter how gifted, and

just so far or so much asthe individual engages in side issues, just so much

wiil his success in agricuiture be lessen- ed. And at no time is the temptation to engage io other pursuits more strong than during the winter months, which are supposed to demand much less of the farmers time. And if the farmer allows himself to he swayed by this tempta- tion, he is almost absolutely sure to meet with loss. Heenters into some mercantile pursuit, as a rule, for which he had no special training,and for which he ia not fitted in any way. Lacking as he does, experience of mercantile methods and giving eredit as he had been accustomed to do in his agricul- tural operatioos, he soon finds his capi- talgone. Itixsonly onein a hundred that really makes a suecess in mercan- iile life, and he only after many and yrevious losses and wearing trials, and the farmer who would devote the same energy and applicationte his farming methods would most assurdly be three times as successful as if he had changed. Every business or pursuit in life re- quires a spocial training, knowledge and aptiule;th s+, except the latter in a degree, come trom experience, and larming most assurdly forms no excep- tion. Country life is fully as honorable and manly, as itis more ennobling and simple Chan city lite, and there is no sense Or reason in the gibes and = sneers so often cast epon life on the farm. No sensible person ia affected by this, and those who love the farmthe most are those who have been farmers, have had a taste of city business and life and re- turned to it.
