Since his England debut. Wright has missed only three matches, all because of injuries.

Short and stocky, Wright camet to Wolverhampton in 1939 look- ing for a job in soccer. He was taken on as a groundsboy butt after five months manager Frankt Buckley told him he was too small to make the grade.

A broken-hearted Wright left: the manager’s office. resigned 10‘ a career outside soccer. But not for long. Members of thcstaff interceded on his behalf and just before the Second World War started. Buckley relented and, signed him to a playing contract.

Buckley had made one of the best soccer investments of all time for a mere £10. When the war ended there was no holding Wright. who went on to win every honor soccer can offer. CLEAN PLAYER
