" aide, pro- minent fish packer, has started construction of a new packing plant at the Queens Wharf which will replace the old one destroyed by fire several years ago. of wooden construction, it will be about 50 feet by 30 feet in size. A cement floor will be laid in the front part. of the building where the lobsters are brought in and also on the ground floor will be the boiler room, the cold storage plant and the canning plant. It is hoped that the construction of the plant will enable canning op- erations to be undertaken next spring.-S

About a week ago. a prominent educator whose name escapes us came out with the statement that English teachers are responsible for the undisputed fact that mod- ern students do not like poetry. We think the gentleman may have something there. Of course, there is a possibility that our modern restless age is at least partly re- sponsible for the disfavor into which poetry has fallen, but tea- ching methods are probably at fault also. For instance. the cus- tom of making students - write down poetry is all wrong, we think. Just-as surely as songs are writ- ten to be sung. poetry is written to be recited aloud. How else can the rhythm and music. the euphony of the word parade be properly appreciated.

Examixiations require. however. that the students write the verses down on paper, and so that the techniques of composition may not suffer. correct punctuation is demanded. A lot of the magic of poetry is lost in the process. If the losooon could be conducted entirely on an oral basis. and if in English examinations pupils were required to recite, rather than write those poetry gems, (added marks being given for expression) it. might in- crease poetry appreciation it little Then, of course, there is the un- fortunate fact that pupils are re- quired to learn these poems. and as Mark Twain so aptly put it. "Work is what a body is obliged to do, and play is what a body is not obliged to do." Poetry learning should be play, not work. but this particular situation poses quite a problem. ,

We notice with interest that in the United States language in- struction, (particularly Spanish, French and German) is being be- gun in the earlier grades. TOR.0N'l'O. Oct. 2'1 -(C?) - The area of most concern to fire- men after an atomic explosion from 2,000 feet would be the zone from one half to two miles from the centre of the blast, Dr. E. E. Massey of the Defence Research Board said today.

In an address to the Canadian Civil Defence Tactical Fire' Study Forum, Dr. Massey said a nominal atomic bomb-one releasing energy equivalent to 20,000 tons of TNT- would destroy all buildings within a half mile and the blast and rubble might be expected to smoth- er any fires. Four In Hospital After Accident

Four persons from Albertcn were taken to the Western Hos- pital last night, suffering from severe lacerations of the face, following an accident in which the driver of a 1952 Meteor lost con- trol of the vehicle at the Dock Corner near Alberton and went into the ditch for a considerable distance before coming to a stop at a driveway leading to the home of Mr. Erskine Clark. The ac- cident occurred about nine o'clock.

l'l'ho condition of Dr. N. R. Bovyer. 85, Crapaud, who is a patient at the Prince Edward Is- land Hospital, was reported as "about the same" late last night.

Dr. Eovyer was critically in- jured Sunday night when he step- ped into the path of a car. on the street near his home. He is re- ported suffering from fractures to both legs and the pelvis, and in- juries to his spine.

Despite his severe 'injuries he remained conscious and gave dir- ections to Nurse Lolita Macvlttle, who lives in Crapalid and who was called to the scene pending the arrival of other doctors. Dr. S. Helimich, Borden. responded as did Dr. Gordon Lea, Charlotte- town, a long-time personal friend 0 Dr. Bovyer, who went from the city with the ambulance to take him to hospital here.

Dr. Bovyer, a native of Bun- bury, practised medicine at Crap- aud for approximately 55 years, and taught school there prior to that. He has always led an active life despite this years and re- sponded to calls at all times. He drove. his own car. A keen scholar he is widely read on a great variety of subjects. He has one son, Jack Bovyer, a professor in Montreal.
