Breast cancer

One in ten Canadian women will experience breast cancer in their lifetime. In Prince Edward Island alone, an estimated 75 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. How- ever, more than 2/3 of these women will sur- vive.

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers, whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer, through fundraising, research, education and influence on public policy. |

On Saturday, October 30th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, the PEI Division of the Canadian Cancer Society is sponsoring a public forum to promote that “October is Breast Health Month” featuring three leading experts in the field.

Dr. Dagny Dryer, a Medical Oncologist from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, will discuss the various methods of treatment and the stages from prevention and early detection to recovery.

A breast cancer survivor, Dr. Robin Moore- Orr from Memorial University in Newfound- land, will discuss the effects that cancer may have in the areas of family, coping, sexuality, nutrition, and the patient’s role in decision making.

The latest Canadian research activities will highlight an address by Dr. Ron Buick, the Vice President of Research at the Ontario Cancer Institute. He will also speak about risk factors, genetic links, when results are expected, and what women can do to help themselves.

Following a short break, the audience will have an opportunity to directly ask these spe- cialists any questions they have about this important woman’s issue of the ‘90’s, Breast Health.

WE'RE BACK FOR ANOTHER SEASON! SELFHELP CRAFTS OF THE WORLD THIRD ANNUAL STORE OPENING

SELFHELP is a branch of the Mennonite Central Committee, a North American-wide church organization devoted to aid and development in the Third World. Through our volunteer mar- keting of fine handmade crafts we offer a chance for disadvantaged women, handicapped persons and co-operatives to sell their goods here. In 1992, our small Cornwall outlet was able, with the help of many volunteers, to sell enough crafts to support approximately 25 overseas families for a year.

This year we are excited about the wonder- ful selection of crafts-beautiful baskets, nativity sets, Christmas decorations unlike anything you have seen before, carvings, jewellery and much more. Because we rely on volunteers we can offer these crafts at very reasonable prices and pass on most of the purchase price to the producers.

Through hard work and sharing a part of their culture the producers gain dignity, the ability to provide for their families, and hope for the future. That enriches us all.

Psych club update

Welcome back to another year at UPEI!! The Psych Club had our first meeting of the year and we havea large number of activities planned for the upcoming semester:

-intramural volleyball team -bowling and movie nights -upcoming Grad School information day -ordering club jackets

Rhodes scholarship trust

Rhodes Scholarship for 1994 Newfoundland Applications for the 1994 Rhodes Scholarship from Newfoundland are invited. The Scholar- ship is tenable at Oxford university and is valued at approximately !2,000 per year.

The selection committee will meet in early December with the candidates selected for interview.

University students (male and female) who are ordinarily resident in Newfoundland are eligible to apply.
