Year by year the number of fires in the United States and Canada is steadily and without any apparent reason on the in- crease. While the fire waste in these two countries during the past ten years has in the month ef March averaged a little over $7,000,000, the total during the past month was $i0 650,000. For the first three months of this year the figures were $29,150,000, against a total of $27,500,000 for the same three months of 1885, which is at the rate of $116,000,000 for the current year.

Analogy of Electricity and Mag- netisra to Gravitation.

Tus was the subject of a lecture before the Literary and Scientitic Society last evening, by Mr. Newson. He showed by experiments that electrified and magnetized bodies were not merely attracted but were also polarized. That though bodies in- fluenced by either of those forces were at- tracted by the influencing body, yet the opposite sides were repelled, or the body became polarized. That the force varied inversely as the square cf the distance. (This was ilustrated by diagrams) The lecturer then explained the different motions of the earth and moon. He had drawn @ portion of the earth’s orbit, representing the distance it travels over in one lunation, on a scale of 4 inches to 1,000,000 miles. By a most ingenious piece of mechanism the earth was represented as travelling in its orbit, and the moon describing her orbit round it, showing her different phases with the utmost precision and regularity. The moon’s orbit in space forms two curves always more or leas concave to the sun, one curve is within the other beyoud the earth’s orbit. The lecturer held thit gravitation gave indication of a polarizing influence. He appeared to prove that tidal phenomena are unaccountable on the theory of attraction alone. ‘That mere gravitation as generally held of sun and moon are incompetent te explain the existence of two simultaneous

tides. The lecturer next traced the pres- ence of a polarizing influence in the fact of comet tails being _ail-

ways turned away from the aun. He quoted the opinion of Sir John Her- schell and others as showing the necessity of assuming a repulsive force to explain this phenomenon of all comets. The lecturer closed by remarking that all attractive cle- ments capable of analysis were polaric and that gravitation manifested the same pro- perties in a remarkable degree.

The “Drink” Mania.

Sim,—1 understand there are about one hundred drunkard factories in operation in this unfortunate city; and spacimens of their manufacture can be seen at almost any hour staggering through the streets or being ‘‘convoyed” to their unhappy homes. The keepers of all these man-traps —or dead falls—are selling their poison in open or concealed violation of the law. May we not ask where are those whose duty it is to see the laws of the city en- forced ? We have a Stipendiary, with a salary of $1,000; his accommodating clerk at (say) $500, and a staff of police—all fairly well paid. Can all these city officials suppose for a moment that the law-abiding citizens view, but with deep dissatisfaction, their insincere mockery of carrying out the Scott Act. If they are not in sympathy with the rumsellers, why so few convictions out of so many plain cases of illegal sale ? Surely it would be much more honorable on their part, and a better performance of their duty, to fine the drunkard maker instead of so frequently fining and iwpri- soning the unfortunate drankard. This, I know, is the view of a great majority of our citizens. PARENT.
