A point of play is involved in handling the dummy in this deal which is sometimes overlooked. A great many players. after ion- lng the first two diamond tricks and ruffing the third round. would draw three trumps and thus place all their faith in the hope they imuld lose only one club trick.

As can be seen by examining all ioiir hands. the result of this line of play would be a one trick set Two diamonds and two club! would be lost.

The correct sequence of plays makes the hand. Declarer must make provision against the possi- bility the adverse clubs will di- vide unfavorably. He can do so by delaying the extraction of the opponents' trumps.

Declarer notes that the contract will make if the outstanding clubs are divided .'l-3. He observes also that if the clubs are split 4-2 two club tricks are likely to be lost.

To protect against the loss of two clubs he maintains his trump position in dummy. After ruffing the third round of diamonds. de- clarer plays the ice and king of clubs and follows with another club. it it turns out the clubs break 3-3. everything is under control and the contract is made. Trumps are then drawn at the earliest op- portunity.

if. as in the actual case, the clubs break 4-2. the fourth club can be ruffed in dummy. after which the trumps are extracted. By postponing the removal of trumps. therefore. declarer makes the hand whether the club suit breaks 3-3 or 4-2. Naturally. this line of play is preferable to rely- ing on the 3-3 break.
