Dear Sir,

Please allow me to congratulate you on your editorial in the October 15 issue of X-Press. It is among the first reasoned and insightful comments I have read or heard since the frightening event of September 23.

Indeed, the media has an awesome and terrible power -- a power that, ifnot used delicately or with unbiased assump- tions, can cause fear, panic and hysteria. Witness the events following those first news reports. If used with good judge- ment and dispassionate common sense it can be a source of sound information and knowledge about our world. These, of course, are required from both the sender and the receiver.

Your editorial is a model of both. Thank you.

Dear Editor,

On the behalf of the Sociology/Anthropology Club executive I would like to respond to the letter from Libby Whelan, which appeared in the October 8 issue of the X-Press. We feel that several comments in her letter are misleading, and would like to avoid any confusion due to her complete lack ofasense of humour.

First and foremost, the Socrates Award was given to Prof. LeClair at a private gathering of his friends and colleagues, to which Ms. Whelan was not invited. The award was not presented by ‘‘an institution of higher learning’’, it was Presented as an ‘‘in-joke’’ by one of the rather creative Professors in the department. If Ms. Whelan so desires, that Same professor could easily create one especially for her.

Second, the movie in question, Cannibal women in the Avocado Jungle of Death, is, not, under any circumstances, Pornographic. Ms. Whelan has obviously never seen any- thing even vaguely pornographic. IfMs. Whelan insists that anything with former Playboy bunny in it is pornography I Suggest she get rid of her T.V. The film starred Miss Shan- 4on Tweed, who remained completely clothed and chaste throughout the movie. She also satisfies the Canadian Contentrules.

Third, the P.S. proceeding her letter was completely tacky, 'Mmature and uncalled for. I’m sure, Ms. Whelan, that Cory, Peter, and Joe and too busy having their lives to worry about What you have to say.

AS an English major, as well and an Anth major, I feel it is Ny duty to inform Ms. Whelan that her over use of cliches is ‘talent she could do without.

Thank you for your time, Mr. Editor, and to the student body, Iapologize for digging up last year’s scandal. God knows we have enough as it is.

I, Rick Gallant regret to inform the Executive and Student Union Council of my resignation from the Vice-President Internal Office October 13, 1992. My reasons for resigning are both personal and professional, the latter bearing more weight than the former.

Ican no longer justify my position as Vice President Internal on an Executive in which the President of the Student Union totally disregards the wants and needs of the Student Body. I believe that the Student Union President has lost all objec- tivity with regards to Student Affairs due to a publicly acclaimed personal vendetta.

As I said earlier, I do regret my resignation, but I cannot work at something that I no longer believe in.
