In the quiet hours preceding dawn of Sept. l3, death strode upon tho hearth of Mrs. Mary Mc- Ouron, Auburn and ushered the valiant soul of her aged father" Mr. Joseph Garland into “the still waters and green pastures of eter- nity." His passing though sudden in one sense was not wholly unex- pected fl-‘rr n. kind Providence had served notice on several occasions that the hour of departure could not be imdul/y prolonged.

Born at Fort, Augustus in the year 1844 on a s ot now occupied

y the old Cathuic cemetery, Mr. Garland came of parents who had tho robustness of character and resolute will of the Irish pioneer stock of this country. Prom them‘ he inherited several red blooded traits so characteristic of the pion- eer everywhere, a manly fibre, ex- traordinarily strong endurance and the splendid boldness and courage of those who felled the trees. turn- piksd the trails and built the first

shanties. Practically all his ll o was lived in his native district where by patient and untiring in- dustry he fashioned a COITIIOTIMDIE home. While still in the full vigor of manhood he married Mar- garet Berrfgan who predeceased him thirty-one years ago and from which union was born -\ family of seven sons and four daughters.

Though he lost his e esight about fifteen» years ago the l7 yslcal stamina of the deceased was such that he was wont to remark even after his ninetleth year thatho was never really sick at any time in his life. At the age of ninety-seven he staved off an attack of pneumonia. Thh sickness, however. sorely test- ed his spent constitution and to those of his househofd who kept a constant vigil in order to render him every kindness it became pain- fully evl ent that it was only‘ a mutter of months until his Bin 1H8 heart would pause to beat no more.

The late Mr. Garland was endow- ed with many qualities of heart and mind which explains the high regard and warm affection in which ho was held. sprightly and affable in his way few unified his acquaint- ance without desiring to know him better and to win his friendship.
