Use or Distant Power.—It has been generally questioned whether power could be conveyed electrically from Lauffen to the Frankfort Exhibition, as was proposed some months ago, and the suygestion has been made that if the project were other- wise practicable leakage wou'd consume the entire current in damp weather. The re- sults, however, have demonstrated the im- portant fact that high tension a/ternating currents may be successfully, and in many cases economically, transmitted to great distances. Ona rainy day 200 horse power has been passed over the line, a distance of nearly 112 miles, with an efficiency of about 75 per cent. The current was raised a | transformers to the high potential of 13, volts, before passing over the wire, and then reduced by other transformers to a lower voltage before being utilized in the motor.

Pictures or Movixe Onsecrs.—The pho- tographic analysis of rapid movements has nace great progress. Ina recent series of iastantanecus photographs, Anschutz, of Lissa, has secured 24 successive impressions of a dog in the act of making a single jump over a low bush, and each impression is 1 ob @ mere silhouette, as was the case with Muybridge’s first atternpts of this kind, but a little picture showing half-tone and detail. Some of the attitudes, never caught by the eye, seem quite amusing. This is true at the commencement of the jump, when the dog’s hind toes only touch the ground ; and at the end of the jump, when his legs are gathered together in a heap. LunarSrreaks.—The Astronomer Royal for Scotland states that when the moon is half full its brilliancy is not nearly one-half as great as when it is quite full. He attri- butes the brightness of the full moon to the bright streaks which are then seen over the lunar surface, starting from the craters. He supposes these to be convex or concave, and largely invisible under cross light and brightly illuminated when the sun shines full upon them.

After enduring the heat and burden of the day for eleven months in the year, everybody that can wants to get away from paved streets and renew his acquaintance with nature in August.

Each of us enjoys a holiday in his own way, but it would seem that a considerable number of folks do not know how to enjoy it at all. The rural pleasures that tempt such deluded people are the pampering of appetite and the gratification of vanity. They go to the country to eat more than is healthful, to indulge in violent exercise, to display fine clothes or handsome equip- ages, and often return to town more jaded in body and dispirited in mind than when they left it. But to the prudent man vaca- tion time is a thoughtfully esteemed boon of rest and varying scene. He enters fully into the pleasures of the fields and forests, to use the exquisite similie of Milton, —

PRESERVING PoraToEs —A prize of 1000 francs was not long ago offered by a French association for a method of keeping potatoes and other vegetables. Some isolating sub- stance, such as wood ashes, sawdust or rye straw with sand, was used four of the five competitors. The plan of M. Schribaux, who gained the prize, is to put the potatoes for 10 hours in a. 14 per cent. solution of commercial sulphuric acid, when, after being thvroughly dried, they will keep without alteration more than ayear. The same solution may be used many times.

A new meat extract, called **Oxin,” is prepared in France, and made into tablets, which are said to ba as digestible as raw meat. Lean beef, free from fat, bone and tendon, is pounded to a pulp, ‘mixed with sugar, and heated to about 100 deg. Fahr., when the mixture is converted into a sac- charine extract. Further heating gives any desired Jegree of concentration. Consumption has besn produced in guinea pigs by inoculation with tubercle bacilliobtained by Her Prausnitz in the dust of cars often used to convey patients from Berlin to Meran. The number of bacilli is supposed to have been small, but the necessity of disinfecting the cars used by the sick is shown.

Aw Evecrric Orcan.-—A musical novelty called the ** Electro-magretic Palsiphone,” has been brought out in France by Messrs. Guerre and Martin. Thesound is produced by a sonorous bedy, which is vibrated very rapidly by the interrupter of a Ruhmkorff coil. An electro-magnet is placed under- neath with the interrupter outside, in such away that the gong, or sonorous body, vibrates between them and becomes the vehicie of the current. The sound is con- tinuous, resembling that of an organ pipe, and is said to be very pleasing. The ar- rangement may be used for electric bells, substituting a grave note for the harsh rattling, while it is anticipated that the principle may be applied without difficulty to the production of an electrical organ.

A New ApDvuirerant.—Artificial bitter almonds are now produced at a trifling cost and with such deceptive skill that they can scarcely he detected when used as an adult- erant of the genuine. They consist chiefly of grape sugar. This is flavored with a very small quantity of nitro-benzole, and when pressed in molds the product is made to resemble the natural seeds very closely.

Dr. M. ©. Cooke, of London, finds that 4,600 species of mushrooms and toadstools are now known to science, 1,400 of them being found in the British Isles. Only 134 can safely be regarded as edible, while 30 are decidedly poisoncus.

The fourth edition of the Russian Phar- macopolia is soon to be published, and will describe 808 substances used in medicine. In the third edition the number was 1026, of which 318 have been discarded, while 100 have been added.

It is a frequent saying of the poets that rural eajoyments are the only things which remain constant and changeless in our esteem, In the city all things are transitory. Our friends find new ties in she multitude of people around them. We are continually moving from one dwelling to another, and the appear- ance of the town is so perpetually altering, so fatal to innevation or decay that we cannot feel any enduring regard for inanimate objects, But the features of a rustic land- scape still seem to us as they were in child hood, permanent and unalterable. The mem- ory that a man has of his native hills, of the drook by which his boyhood was spent, is a sentiment that is always fresh. he woods that were full of chestnuts and birds’ nests, the quiet pools in which we angled for perch, the ponds where we learned to swim at one season and to skate at another, the path that winds through the meadow to the old church, and the nearby spot wherein iie many of our young companions—are all there, familar and unchanged. The flight of years has carried us.into maturity or old age, leaving these features of the rural scene still fixed and youthful.

But the sentiment awakened by revisiting old places in the couatry or exploring new ones does no harm to anybody. A_ holiday taken in this way often brings more health than is declared by brawny muscles and brown cheeks. Nature very freqently puts new hap- piness into the mind while she is lending fresh vigor to the body.

Canada’s Growth.

Politically the growth of Canada towards the dignity and importance of a nation has been equally remarkable with her material advancement, Some people confess to a sense of disappeintment in respect to the growth of a national feeling. There is, they say, little indication of the drawing together of East and West in sympathy and aim, and in pride ot nationality, which was anticipated in the early days of Confederation. To take this view appears to us unreasonable. All the widely-spread provinces may not as yet feel to the full the sense of their national uaity. Twenty-five years is, however, but a short time in the life of a nation, too short to efface the impression of the independent and some- times antagonistic attitudes assumed towards each other by neighboring but distinct Colonies. As regards East and West, toc, it must be remembered that until but a very few years ago they were entirely isolated the one from the other by impassable tracts of forest prairie, and mountain. The unifying influence of the trans- continental railway is only beginning to be felt. No; we should have said that Canadians were a people pecu‘iarly imbued with national and patriotic feelings; They seem to have in this respect the perfervid temperament attri- buted to the Scotch. They certainly show far more enthusiam and fervour on national and patriotic questions than their English kinsfolk.
