HALIFAX, March Bil-Officials of the Marine and Fisheries De- partment announced tonight the Government ice-breaker Montcalm would leave North Sydney at mid- night in a. third attempt to reach Flint Island, where distress signals have been flying from the light- house for three days.

Today, intelligible signals came through for the first time, only to have their meaning puzzle onlookers on the mainland. The signs were sent up from the light tower in response to a message dropped from an aeroplane. Pilot Don McPhersons note instructed the islandpcople to flash a light three times if they wished to con- vey a essage of sickness, twice for death. »

the tower blinked. Watchers on shore disagreed as to the number. of ﬂashes. Some claimed it had flashed three times; others saw only two blinks. ' As the shore people attempted to get into communication with the island's 11 persons this afternoon, the wind which had packed ice tightly about the locality for three days had shifted and was moving the ilces offshore.

Preparations were being ,made tonight for a third rescue attempt by thc Government ice-breaker Montcalm, which was to sail from North Sydney, thirty miles away.‘ The Montcalm was expected to make lhe island around two o'clock in the morning.
