UPEISU ELECTION CANDIDATES -

My name is Ivan MacArthur. I am a Junior Business Administration student presently living in Blanchard Hall. For sometime I have ‘ been contemplating running in the upccndng Student ' Union Elections. Recognizing a need for a change in the

-running of the Student Union, I felt I could best incorporate my ideas by running for the position of President.

For the past two years, I have been active on Council as an Arts Representative in my sopohmore year and in the current year as Junior Class President.

In this time I feel I have developed a sufficient knowledge of Council which enables me to recognize

the problems plaguing the

Student Union, as well as an insight on how to act upon the problems.

In this year, more so than any prior years, students should recognize

the pressing need for r -nrxe responsible student ‘ ,gcwernment, in order to

revitalize the presently

- sagging Student Union. ' The primary problem stems

frcnlﬁhe lack of student participation in organized social events and the ina— bility of the existing \ stUdent government to

.respond to them.

In respect to this

last statement, my pro?

posals would involve:

I. look into Medical Ins— urance Plan. Try to seek out less expensive alternatives.

2. Ho1d a referendum on CINN to determine just where the student body stands on its existence.

3. Have the classes and the

societies more active.

. Increase interaction be- tween residence and non- residence students.

5. Agreement with the Administration on their proposed expansion of the cafeteria services by providing a full—time coffee shop.

6. Seek out alternative uses of the Student Union Bldg.

Hopefully, you will consider these proposals fav0urably and support me on March 17th.

student politics. There are ten points under Brown's New Deal, but space permits me to briefly discuss only three of the policies.

‘ To beginrwith, I wish,to -upgrade SU communication

facilites such as CIMN. By this I mean come big or go home. If we 90 big, CIMN can be transmitted into every'building on the campus. By doing this

the radio station can become a viable part_of

the Student Union.

see more representatidn

by students on various

committees to give students

more voice in UPEI's 'future, Right now, a (committee made up entirely of professors and administ- ration is in the process of deciding renovations for Main Building. That building is going for student use; yet we havC no voice in the reconstructm Committee.

Finally, I want to‘ revitalize the Disciplinary, Personnel, and other boards connected to the Student Union. In the past, there have been problems with the policies guiding these boards. I hope to see I more council representation on them.

in the fall I promoted the Symposium by strutting

about campus in the guise

of Chickenman. However, I have also been involved in some more conventional organizational and promotional efforts, both

on campus and off._ One example is the public meeting that I helped set

up in Duffy during the federal election. “Concerning the university, I have also been active in setting up

a Christmas hockey tournament which I hope

will become an annual affair. Qualities such as my enthusiasm for campus life and my experience in community as well as campus activities have permitted
