HitisnorovucH Park.—At a meeting of the committee in charge of the Square, held last evening, it was resolved that im- mediate steps be taken to further improve the grounds by planting trees in place ol those destroyed, repairing the walks, etc., and that a suitable man be employed under the direction of ymmittee to take charge of the grounds. The committee ex- pressed their thanks to the Queen’s Jubilee Committee for their hendsome donation of $25 towards improvements, which sum the Committee will supplement by their own aunual subscriptions as usual. Mr. Rufus Pope’s candidature in Compton is being received in the most enthusiastic manner by the electors of that constituency.

Dr. Dodd returned to his home in this city last evening. He was accompanied by Hor. T. W. Dodd who went to meet him. His friends will be glad to learn that he is in im proved health.

Mr. William L. Bright is thinking ot retir- ing from Parliament, to devote himself to business, in which he is enormously successful. He is the only son of John Bright’s sons who inherits his fathee’s rare sense of humor.

“Silk Hats for Beggars.”

Sir,—This is a quotation from some edi- torial remarks of the Patriot of the 7th inst. We poor countrymen who frequent the Market Square in the prosecution of our business, and for which privilege (/) we pay a direct tax to the city, must be dubbed beggars by the J atriot. Surely, Mr. Editor, this is unkind and ungeuerous on the part of the editor of that paper, who, himself, hails from the country, and should be the last man to cast a slur on the farmer and others from the country.

Sut, Mr. Editor, we farmers and others from the country have a still more serious complaint to make, and it is this: The utter neglect of our rights and comforts as shown by the civic authorities. Let me cite a case. My wife or daughter leaves home at 6 or 7 o'clock in the morning, and reaches the market, after travelling about ten miles at say % o'clock, and then ascends the mar- ket stairs and stands at the tables perhaps for four or five hours. There are no toilet or sanitary appointments provided for their convenience and necessities —no apartment! to which to retire for a moment for any purpose. Surely, Mr. Editor, this inhuman, and I was going to say savage, state of things must strike your worthy and kind- hearted Mavor, of whom we are all justly proud, as something calling for immediate action. I, perhaps, may have to return to this subject again. Meantime, I trust that enough has been said to direct immediate atfention to this much needed reform.

A P. E. Island man named O'Hara en- listed with the Royal School of Infantry on Saturday for a three month’s term, but deserted the same day. This morning the picket found O'Hara at.the Indian camps, »rought him back and locked him in the guar t room.
