COIDMBO, Ceylon. (Reuters) - The free nations of South and Southeast Asia are responding to the "spur and challenge" of their economic difficulties through the helping hand of the six-year Col- ombo plan. s report at the half- wny mark said Wednesday.

The consultative committee re- leased its third annual report on the 55.600.000.000 plan for economic development of the area. The re- port. wu prepared at an October meeting In Ottawa of the free Asian powers, Canada. Britain, the United states. Australia and New Zealand-all contributors to the project.

The report said most countries of South and Southeast Asia in- creased output in all the main flelds of economic activity and ex- panded their soclal services in the 1953-54 period. It added the coun- tries of the area are "under no illusions about the magnitude of the efforts required." But they had "responded to the spur and the challenge of economic difficulties."

The report said the population of the area continued to increase at the rate of 8.000.000 annually. Food production increased further but is still below the pre-war lnvel.
