—New York has been suffering from a thermometer at 99} degrees. New York's suffering citizens ought to emigrate, for the summer, to P. E. Ieland.
—The fact that the cost of taking the Ontario prohibitien plebiscite is to be put on the municipalities is evoking a good many growls, and has a tendency to make the proceeding unpopular. Sir Oliver seems to have shown his political skill again. If the electors decline te vote in the contest, the excuse will be provided him for declining to bother the Legislature with the issue.
—The Empire : The moral of the Ceaven- tiom is plain. The leaders at Ottawa perceive that as they cannot unite on a policy the next best thing is to rally the forces and periect the organization. This is a wise move for any party; it is trebly necessary for the fed- eral grits. Conseqaently, they have engin- eered a very clever plan of sinking outward differences, equaring recalcitrants, and bane ishing disturbing spirits to outer darkness. The resolutions adopted were general in char- acter and railroaded through without discue- sion. Burning issues were sternly frowned down. Couat Mercier and Premier Green-

A leading Chicago newepaper has taken the pains to figure out the cost of « ten days visit to the exposition asa little less than $19, including admission to the grounds, entrance into all the side shows and concessions, rides on all the sliding railways, ete. This allows for fares from the heart of she city and back and 50 cents a day forluncheon, which last item may certainly be reduced one-half. The 50 cents admission te the grounds grants entrance to allthe main buildings (14 of them and their annexes) with their exhib- its, any one of which would repay hours oreven days study; to all the foreign buildings, except those on the Midway plaisance, and to the different state build- ings.

the grounds in the way of stations for rest and refreshment The bureau of comfort of the World’s Columbian Exposition has established waiting rooms in every part of the grounds, with parlors and for ladies and children, after the manner of a first- elass railway station, with bureaus of infor- mation free of charge, and there is a well- equipped and thoroughly organized emer- gency hospital on the grounds. The bureau of public comfort provides telegraphic service, telephones and messenger boys at the usual rates and sells stationery and other stall necessaries, checks parcels and provides guides at moderate charges. The Women’s Building makes especial provision for the comfort of women at the exposition, and the Children’s Building across the way is designed for the entertain. ment of children and the instruction of their mothers. There will be plenty of lunch counters and dining rooms, where you may buy whatever you like, from a cup of coffee ors glass of milk to a square meal, and pay accordingly.—Mrsa. Moses P. Tus Borpen Cass.—Advices from Fall River state that Lizzie Borden's mail is something extraordinary. At least two hundred letters were taken in her home recently by the lone man who resides in the house, and he makes frequent visits to the post office during the day. A great many of the letters come from membera of the Christian Endeavor and W. C. T. U. socie- ties throughout the country. The girls have not stepped out since their arrival here, but are kept very busy receiving callers. Marshal Hilliard and Mayor Coughlin are receiving some astonishing letters, most of them being of the moat vilifying character. Among other things received was a big leather medal from New York state.

Mr. Donald Sixtyworth, Cardagsin, Dear Sir,—Accordin tv promis I now rite to give you account of my trip as dele- gate to Ottawha, which you know as I undertevk for the interest of turnin out the government of Sir John Tompson and tryin to help ia our good grit party, as we have been a long time now in the shed of public life. Wel, we had a plesant time on the way, me and the Captin and Davis and Peters, and all the rest of the good felloes, only we felt very thursty and had a sharp appetite on account of the terrible hot weather—so hot that it put me in mind of the Huns who stewed their meat under their bums. Wouldn’t we mske the Consorvatives shiver and shake for fear of losin their offices, As it is, the leader says they must go out next election, and I took care to look out a good office for you after I am served myself. Wasn’t it lucky that the soger laddie pro me as delegate, other- wise I should never have seen the innards of our party workings; and, tho’ I felt like a goose among swans, and was never asked to deliver my speech that I took so much time preparing, yet I was cheered for a song, which I gave. The leaders were cautious in arranging that no question should be touched on which the party would be likely to split or fall out, and Mr. Fielden, of Halifax, earried a resolution to that effect and a good job he did, as otherwise thers was certain to be an explosion of dinamite. The materials were all there and «a spark would have blown up the whole 1500 delegates, as hardly 4 a dozen of us held the same opinions on public questions. As ic was, a Mr. Develin nearly upset the hole business by protesting strong agen the appointment of Mr. Sifton as vice chairman, because he tavored the schoo! laws of Manitoba. In his protest he said, I detest the principle of which the Manitoba government is the incarnation, the principle of oppression. Develin is a liberal and the government of Manitoba is also liberal, but develin hates it. ‘here was silence mute as death and the boldest held his breath, fora time—when it was moved by a Mr. Hyman that the delegates adjourn and put home as quick as possible. You will remember that Mr. Hyman was the candidate who had the jolly time at a feast of pigs feet and ale before the elec- tion with the electors of his constituency. Ax Extraonpinary Case.—An extraordin- ary law suit was before the Supreme Court at Halifax on Monday. It appears that Albert and Joseph Ward, as private citizens, brought an action agaiast themselves as executors of their father's estate, and confessed judgment te themselves in the sum of $8,000. Judge Meagher decided that the Wards, as executore in this case, could not confess a judgment to themselves. It would bea reproach to the judicial system. Hegave the Wards ten days in which to discontinue the suit. A sister of the Wards received judgment against them for $8,000. She was left the money by her uncle. Her estate was administered in Hali- fax, her father believing she was dead. The father died soon after and left the supposed dead daughter's share to his sons. The daughter sued the sons for her share and re- covered judgment. Her brothers then brought an action against themselves, as executors of their father's estate, and confessed a judg- ment,
