In view of the electric light being in operation in Sighteen or twenty days time the Council otfere i the Gas Directors $450 per month of &month or two ; this is at the rate of $40 per year. The Directors refused. Six hundred per month, at the rate of (200, was their terms. Had the City Council accepted this, it would have been the grostest picce of eatravagance ever perpetrated by the most extravagant of the their predec-siors. The Government bought ont the landed proprietors, but thank Heaven we have no need to buy out the Gas Company. It has been said that ‘orporations have no souls ; this may be true of the Gas Company, but our City onneil has a soul and a conscience also. You say on ‘‘Saturday night the Com- pany lighted the streets at their own ex- Pense;” they could well afford it when they used to remove the pressure at 11 clock, thus getting full pay for half the ov after that hour. You say ‘‘the °mpiny have the Council before the wind, and who can blame them for demanding a good price?” Pardon me, in view of our SXeessive taxation, I thought you had the interests of the city more at heart.
