Tae misrepresentation to which Mr. Alexander Martin M. P., directe public at- tention in his letter to the editor of The Patriot, published in anotber column, is groee and outrageous. We chellenge successfu! contradiction of the statement that there is no newspap2r in this Pro- vince which has more persistently advocat~ ed the construction of a bridge over the Hillsborough than Tue Rxaminea, The fact is so well known, that we did no‘ con< sider it worth while to contradict the Patriot’s misstatement. On his own be half Mr. Martin hae, however, deemed it necessary to publicly declare that the Patriot's reference to him is* jncorrect ” and to request a statement of the grounds upon which itis made. It is unnecessary to say that Mr. Martin’s demand has nct been met. Instead of meeting it, instead of explaining tae grounds of its charge, the Patriot proceeds to draw an “inference,” the clearness of which it preteote to see — though no ono else can—and iv misrepre- sent and decry the long past actions of the Liberal Conservative party. In this latter regard, it is to be remembered that the firat steps in any large enterprise are in- variably sccompsuied by “suggestions”

and “estimates” which may Or may or may not be practical or correct. Sach euggestions and ertimates were made in respect to
