Except the Life of Lincoln and the War Articles, no more importnnt series has eve been undertaken by Tue Century than this of Mr. Kennan’s. With the previous prepa- ration of four year’s travel and study in Rus- sia and Siberia, the author undertook a journey of 15,000 miles for the special investi gation here required. An introduction from the Russian Minister of the Interior admitted him to the principal mines and prisons, where he became acquainted with some three hun dred State exiles,—-Liberals, Nihilists, and others,—and the series will be a startling as WwW ell as eccurate rev elation of the exile sys- tem. The many illustrations by the artist and photographer, Mr. George A. Frost, who accompanied the author, will add greatly to tho value of the articles.
