armour-plated ships under construction were being pushed rapidly on, the guns has Leen settled, and complicated ques- tions of detail decided. As to the armour-plated ships which had been re- cently launched, or who were just com- pleted, the trial of the guns of the Ajax and the Agamemnon was very success- ful, und the speed of the Conqueror and Edinborough was full up to anticipation. Shipbuilding as applied to ships of war was peculiarly open to criticism because of the various qualities required. A perfeet fighting ship of the present day should havea very high speed and carry a grest supply of coal. She must be pro- tected by armour against the heaviest guns,as well as with all the latest inven- tions for discharging torpedoes. She must have a moderate draught of water, and be handy to turn. It would be im- possible to produce such a ship, and the real question was, which of the desirable qualities must be sacrified ? There was reason to think that the ships that were now being built were not inferior to those of other vations. Lord North- brook expressed his conviction that Mnglish naval authorities and engineers would show themselves as superior’ in building ships of war as they had done in. the construction ot magnifieant mer- chant steamers. Referring to guns, Lord Northbrook spoke strongly of the superiority of the new guns.
