The man pulled a $10 bill from bis vest pocket, and laid it on bis knee and said :

After some hesitation a shake purse of $10 was raised, the fish hung to the scales, and he showed an ounce over. The crowd kicked on the scales, and the fish was weighed in the steamer’s pantry. The figures held good, but he was weighed over again when they land- ed, and the money had to be passed over.
‘‘How did you do it ?’ asked a police- man, when the crowd had dispersed.
“Simply poured seventeen ounces of bird-shot down his throat,” was the re- ply ; and be let the fish’s head drop, and the shot pattered out on the wharf like a young hailstorm.

A clergyman relates the following, touching his experience?in California in an early day. The church over which he presided was a small one, weak and struggling, and located not far from a mining camp. It was quite a common thing for the miners to drop into church, and to their credit be it said that they always maintained the best of order and never allowed the plate to pass un- noticed. One Sabbath after service the pastor was stopped by atypical forty- niner who, after passing the time of day, said :—‘Parson they tell me the
gospel lead you’re workin’ here dou't pan out very rich. Isthat so?’ The parson confessed that results were
hardly satisfactory. “Well,” continu- ed the miner, “I heard you preach to- day and it took me back to old times. Now, I ain’t no great shakes on religion, but I’m big on salary,’ and putting a double eagle io the astonished parson’s hand, he strode away. — Harper's Bazar. ~-:<-
Gold in British Columbia.
The rush to the new gold fields at Granite Creek, British Columbia, pro-
mises to equal that of 58 to the then newly discovered mines of the pro- vioce. It was only in June last, that two prospectors came across the first indications of the precious metal and
there are already over a thousand men at work in the district, half of them Chinese, and the inpour of fortune seekers still continues, Extraordinary tales are told of the richness of the finds. The gold is coarse and of fine quality and sells at $17 un ounce, and $40 a day for one man is looked on as ar ordinary occurrence, some even ex- ceeding this. Other streams in the neighborhood show promising indica- tions, and the mountains are overrun with prospectors. Oysters and Star Fish.

THE COLONIAL AND INDIAN EXHIBITION
to be held in LONDON, England, commenc- ing MAY Ist, 1886, is intended to be on a scale of great magnitude, having for object to mark an epoch in the relations of all the parts of the British Empire with each other.
In order to give becoming significance to the event, a Royal Commission is issued for the hold- ing of this Exhibition for the first time since 1862 ; and His Koyail Highness the Prince of Wales has been appointed President by Her Majesty.
The verydarge space of 54,000 square feet has been alloted to the Dominion of Canada by com- mand of the President, His Royal Highness.
This Exhibition is to be purely Colonial and Indian, and no competition from the United Kingdom or from foreign nations will be per- mitted, the object being to exhibit to the world at large what the Colonies can do.
The grandest opportunity ever offered to Can- ada is thus afforded to show the distinguished place she occupies, by the progress she has made in Agriculture, in Horticulture, in the Industrial and Fine Arts,in the Manufacturing Industries, in the Newest Improvements in Manufacturing Machinery, and Implements, in Public Works by Models and Designs; also in an adequate display of her vast resources in the Fisheries, and in Forest and Mineral wealth, and also in Shipping.
All Canadians of all parties and classes are in- vited to come forward and vie with each other in endeavoring on this great occasion to put Canada in her true place as the premier colony of the British Empire, and to establish her proper posi- tion before the world.
Every farmer, every producer, and every manu- facturer, has interest in assisting, it having been already demonstrated that extension of trade always follows such efforts.
