Bexuin, March 7. It is still hoped that the Emperof may rally. The doctors are anxious on account of his declining strength. Last night he had a serious fainting fit, the secoud during his illness.‘ After midnight he layin a doze. The doctors were unable to wake him until late in the afternoon. Late in the evening he asked for food, and partak- ing, felt refreshed. It is stated that in addition to the kidney affections, the Emperor is suffering from imtense pains, due to inflammation of the parts affected by rupture. Morphia was administered to alleviate the pain, but was too much for his strength, and was discontinued The | dectors do not leave him a moment, Great excitement prevailed in the palace all day, The official bulletins state that the Crown Prince passed a good night. Sir Hector Langevin in reply to Mr. Perry, said that it was not the intention of the Government to place any sum in the: estimates for the purpose of improving communication with Prince Edward Island or of fulfillmg the Terms of Union with that Province.

Sir Charles informed the House that the consent of Sir Lionel West aud Secretary Bayard had been obtained* to lay on the table the proposals made by the British plenipotentiaries, and the reply to these proposals in regard to greater commercial freedom between the two countries. :

A Terrible Calamity.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 7.

The new office of the Hrewing Union was burnt out this forenoon. The blaze was attended with the most sickening sorrow ever witnessed in the eity. Light employes met a terrible death by jamping from the fifth story, and being crushed into a shapeless mass below. Five others were bac ly injured. The fire was first dis- covered in the mailing room, and shot upan old elevator in the rear, cutting off escape by the stairway. PMost of the employes who escaped found their way to the ground by a roof in the rear.

Winvows Broxes.--Last night a young man named Alexander McRae entered the store of Mr. A. Mctonald, on Queen Street, and demanded liquor. Mr. MeDouald refused to oblige him, and he became noisy, and was sxromptly ejected. On reaching the sidewalk he proceeded to demolish the large plate-glass yanes of the shop window, after doing which he walked off. McRae will likely figure at the Stipeadiary Magistrate's Court some of there days.
