CROP PROSPECTS

Hay

The hay crop has been exal- lent generally speaking although -11 some parts of the Province, the cutting has been only ordinary. Time is a tendency in recent years in sections of heavy growth. to neglect saving much valuable iced. 'I'hls should not be done, for scarcely a year passes out some part of the Province shows a almrtage of roughage coming on spring. The crop has gone up in excellent shape this year. and much of the grass has gone into grass silage.

Grass Silage

it almost looks as if the whole trend of farm production is head- .ng toward grass farming. some runners in Upper Canada are using almost their whole farm in aasture and silage. and placing dependence for grains on the West. There are good arguments ill this point. The next few years rill see a omplete revolution in arm practises and methods, based tn the bedrock of grass farming.

The writer feels we are going i0 have a. reduced yield of grain this year. The hot, dry weather is stalling grain owth and some of the late seed rig is beginning to show its effects. Early gram indicates excellent vigor, but coll- iinued hot. dry weather and rapid ripening can quickly reduce pro- spectiv yields. This may be A year n which the value of a Freight Assistance policy may be fully appreciated.

While early pastures were lush and of excellent clover quslitg grazing is rapidly tapering o . Pastures are becoming dry, and the bottoms thin. Dairy produc- llon is showing the edect of re- laced pasture quality. and these wise farmers who provided sup- plementary feed will be in a pro- Lecied position. Two years ago grass silage pits were opened out about August 20th, and the con- tents were of tremendous value for the balance of a dry and poor nasiurage period. It is under such conditions that the providing of this and other supplemental green feeds, indicate real worth in the Droduction program.

Fslconwood Farm is well sup- plied this yesr with extra rough- age feed. Fslconwood. which pion- eered in grass silage. has one trench filled with upwards of 800 tons of grass, and inxsdditian about '15 extra tons in an upri ht silo. The main field from when this grass was taken is now ready for s second cutting, with a crop almost as heavy as the first. Later in the season, with kind of form we b . it is expected A third crop will be harvested or the field turned over to fall past- ure. Orchard grass, Timothy, Rye grass, Rod. Ladino and White Clover has msdeithe yield one of high volume and quality. The potato crop seems to be standing the dry weather in good shape. and gives evidence oi good yield prospects. Acreage will be from 5 to 1096 above last year, and there has been little miss in the crop.

Importation of Poultry

As a. precautionary measure regulations were drawn up where- by people importing chicks into the Province are required to no- tify the Provincial Department of Agriculture at least ten days prior to the expected arrival of the birds in order to obtain a licence. These regulations were put into effect as a control measure and to help protect the poultry industry. In order to benefit from this pro- tection it is necessary for all con- cerned to co-operate. Those fall- ing to co-operate are subject to a. penalty as contained in the Poultry Products Act oi 1941.

A Joint club meeting of the Maple Leaf Calf Club of Norboro and vicinity and the Freetown Club met at the home of Harold Laird. Kelvin, on Tuesday even- ing, July 22. Morris Deacon, Field- rnah, wps present and gave in- struction in judging dairy cattle. The Club membe were jucglng two classes of Guernsey cattle. Fourteen members were present from the Maple Leaf club and nine from Freetown. . . .

The regular judging class of the "Happy Farmers Club" of Alexandra was held at the home of Club members Maurice and Addison Mccsbe on A ursdsy evening, July 24.

Following the judging of the Holstein class instruction was given in showmanship. Maurice and Addison brought their calves out for this demonstration.

Every day is Friday for the sledge dogs of Canada's Northlanrl. which feed mostly on whitefish cleaned and dried by their own- ers.

If n husky is fed regularly, he can travel 60 miles daily, but he can go without food for a week and sleep outdoors, no matter what the weather is.

There's no brook to fish in like a meadow brook. The trout like meadows; as their food is more abundant there, and, usually, there are plenty of good hiding places.

I early learned these facts from daily fishing trips to the meadow brook which flowed through our Cornwall farm. now the property of the Stone family. '

In those days I was a true angler. and could take trout from I hundred and one places familiar to the fish and to me. In spite of my willow fishing rod, string line, and often bent pin for a fishhook. My great secret in select- ing the right kind of belt, I now hand on to you, namely: use small earthworms, grasshoppers, and grubs. These are fish tid- hifs. They will Jump out of the water to get on your hook. Willi such bait I have seen a group of my schoolmates take a long string of speckled beauties from the creek on the most unpromlslnli days.

There is no casting in small creeks. One has to measure the distance! One has to avoid an overhanging limb or bush and drop the line exactly in the right spot, which usually meant drop- ping it in the deepest part of the water. or beside the bank. where the current made an entic- ingly cool. shady retreat for Mr or Mrs. Trout.

Trout streams were in all my boyhood dreams. I was often de- tained by them on my way in and from school. and had is difficult time explaining to the teacher

LENNOX ISLAND AND THE FEAST OF ST. ANNE

The outdoor ceremonies of the Feast of St. Anne at Lennox Is- land last Sunday were beautiful in setting and spirit. In her bower of green leaves. against the spark- ling waters of Mslpeque Bay and under the open skies, the statue of the Saint in her gold crown and gold embroidered blue man- tle, over her rose coloured gown, looked as lovely as any in msg- niflccnt cathedral niche.

I saw a sweet-faced young Sis- ter skim back and forth arrang- ing the unpretentious flowers at her feet and upon the gold and white altar. There were mari- golds and blue forget-me-nots and blue corn flowers and deep-rose snap-dragons and Sweet Williams, and many-hued pdtunias from the gardens around the shrine-flow- era planted by devoted hands and with the artist's imagination to reflect the colors of the sky and water and Saint's costume and that of the Babe. on her arms upon whom she bent her loving and compassionate glance.

Father Monaghan's address. do- livered in his rich and sympath- etic voice, reached the hearts of the hundreds of worshippers in words homey and direct. St. Anne, he said, was worthy of reverence. not because she traveled widely and gained disciples and spraadl the Faith as did St. Patrick in Ireland and St.Augustine in Eng- land, but because she was the mother of Mary and the grand- mother of Jesus.

She is not written about in Scriptures or history, he said. but to honor her, takes no honor from the Greater Ones. The honor of I. son is enhanced by the honor paid to his mother. As the mother of Mary, and the grandmother of Jesus, Father Monaghan contin- ued, Saint Anne stands near Jesus and Mary and acts as In- tercessor for all who offer sincere prayers. He mentioned the Shrine of Bcaupre and the prayers an- swered there--prayers often not swered there-prayers often not of those afflicted in material ways, but in then” souls. which may be worse. A fine little book, ”The Saint Called Good", by Eugene Lefebre, gives many details of the miracles wrought by Saint Anne.

Those who had the privilege of atending these ceremonies will wish to come again. The Island is worth visiting at any time. Separated from P. E. I. by less than I. mile stretch of blue water.

She gave her knowledge and of- forts freely those early days be- fore there were Red Cross nurses or doctors visiting the Island, to help in the fight against tubercu- losis and other diseases. She looks at, the nest houses. the gardens. the school and other improve- ments. and yet-she regrets the days when she first came to the tiny Indian settlement on Lennox Island.
