has of setting a good bull is to Purchase one from n tested and disease-free herd. The cost of

maintaining such herds ls high and hence the purchase price has to be reasonably good.

To the smaller dairy farmer the Price factor is a. very important it- em. as usually he can only keep a bull two or three years. Onc way of lowering the cost of bulls is to build a. good bull pen and thus be able to keep older bulls. Often older good bulls can be purchased reasonably and also bulls can be exchanged. By the latter method the PWNIRSQ price can be spread over at least four or five years rather than two or three years.

Another way of reducing the cost oi’ bulls ls through artificial bwed- ink. In most herds there are n1- ways three or four outstanding cows-cows that are good miikcrs; good individuals and regular breed- ers. Such cows could be artiflcnliy b to a good proven sire and a bull calf raised for future use in the herd.

A good bull. by whatever means he is obtained ,is essential to the prosperity of a dairy farm. Evm if a dairy farmer purchascs most or all of his cows. he still relics upon someone using-n good bull or he won't get much profit out of the cows": "Perhaps n dairy farmer ls more dependent upon a good sire than are breeders or any oth- er class of stock.
