The steamer Sikh, sailing from Port Townsend, Wash., for the Orient on Satur- day, carried away three Chinese who are na peculiar predicament. They left China at the breaking out of the war with Japan, landed at Victoria and made their way across the continent, attempting an en- trance into New York. They were cap- tured and ordered to be deported, being brought to Port Townshead in charge of Marshals at a _ cost of $3,000. The penalty of desertion in Chinais death, so that when the coolies arrive at Hong Kong they will be sentenc- ed todeath. This fact prompted several local humanitarians to interest themselves in the case, with the result of developing the remarkable fact that, though the sen- tence of death be passed, the culprit need not necessarily die. Fear of death is con- sricuously absent among the Chinese and only in the case of the better classes, who appreciate the stigma is any attempt made to avert that fate.
