Credit Sales To Canadians Shows Increase

OTTAWA lCPi - Canadians have been increasing the rate of their credit buying to the tune of 10 per cent each for the last 10 years. the joint Commons and Senate committee on cowu 2.: credit was told here.

. G . Bouey, chief of the Bank of Canada‘s research de- partment. said this a higher rate of growth than found in the United States. where consumers had extended their total by 8% per cent every year since 1954.

Mr, Bouey also said statistics seemed to show that far more Americans than Canadians ob- tai"ed loans on their mortgages to finance such consumer credit as car and appliance payments.

Mortgages and other forms of housing financial arrngements were considered outside the scope of consumer credit nd thus the amount of related credit being derived from them would not be assessed. he said.

In July. the joint committee is to hear a submission from the federated finance companies of Canada It is also scheduled to hear views on consumer credit from the Ontario Credit Union League. the Canadian Federa- tion of Agriculture. the National Credit Union Association and the Retail Merchants Associa- tion Of Canada.
