Mojor-General O’Grady-Haley, accom~ panied by his aside-deecamp, Captain Fleming, arrived in Charlottetown from O tawa on Seturday night.

Yesterday morning 4 military parade to St. Paul’s Church was held, composed of No’s 1 acd 3 Co’s. 82nd Regiment. Gen, O’Grady Haley was present. After ser vice, conducted by Rey. Leo Williams, the troops marched to the Drill Shed where the Artiliery, Eagioners and 4th Regiment, C A, band were inspected by the General, He expressed pleasure at the turnout and the appearance of the oreo.

This afternoon General O’Grady Haley is inspecting the Charlottetown Engineers. Iofeutry drill began about one o'clock. At 2.30 inspection in military engineers ing was commenced. A ponoon and trestle bridge was thrown across Govern- ment Pond. Ss

Hatirax, Sept 24.—An electrical storm

The storm was general throughout the province, and played havoc with fish voxes and electric light transformers, paralyzing telephone system in’ sections aud leaving some sections of the towa in darkness.

CONCERNING BAKING POWDERS.

Report of the Inland Revenue De- partment—Large Quantities of Impure Powders Found— Sale of Alum Powders Fcrbidden.

The Bulletin of the Inland Revenue Department (No. 63) cea'ains analvees ot 156 samples of baking powders boagkt of dealers and mannfacturera in the Domin~ ion. The alarming statement is made that 85 per/cent. of these are alum mix- tures.

Ia view of this large praportioa of alum powders, Cuief Analyst Macfarlane recom~ mende that legal proceedings be takea against parties selling them, on the ground that they are unhealthful article» of food.

Upon this recommendation the Com~ miesioner of Ivland Revenue has given public notice that persons selling alum powders will te prosccuted.

The analysis were made by the Assi-t ant Analyet, Mr. A. McGill, who ful. digcusses the use of ulum in baking powu~ ers, which, be is of the positive opinion, is dangerous to health.

Frofessor Rattan, of McGill College. Montreal,who m ade a series of experiments on the digestibility «f bread baked with alum powders, is quo‘ed as follows: * The unasimous verdict of my experimente is that sium powders introduce into a form of food of uuiversal u-e, agents which are detrimental to the tuoctional activity ot the digestive ferments. They must there~ fore be pr+judicial to health, and the only course ie () carefully avoid them.

Both contumers and grocers are inter- ested in this matter. Housekeepers should te very careful in purchasing their baking powders, The a'um powders can generally be distinguisned by their low price. They cost but two or tb:ee cents a pouod to make, aad are sold from ten to thirty cents, A pure, cream Of tartar powder, is quite expens ve to make, and is sold from torty to fitty cents.
