provinces. Close on its heels, however, came our own Prince Edward Is- land National Park, established in 1937. By this time, it had become desirable for each province to have at least one national park and New Brunswick followed suit in.1947 with the creation of Fundy National Park. The groundwork was laid for the establishment of a park even be- fore Newfoundland joined Confederation but it was not until 1957 that Terra Nova National Park was officially established.

During the twenty-five odd years since that time, many new nat— ional parks have been created to form a total of twenty-nine across Canada. Each of these parks has been established to preserve a parti- cular example of one of our outstanding natural regions as well as other significant features of our national heritage. Protected by the National Parks Act of 1930, Canada's National Parks are dedicated to the benefit, education and enjoyment of all Canadians - now and in the future.

Our national parks are part of a much larger system which also in- cludes more than seventy national historic parks and sites and nine heritage canals. Together, they form a heritage network, created over the past 100 years, of which we should all be proud. Centennial cele— brations will be held all across Canada this year. Here in P.E.I., we extend an invitation to Natural History Society members to help us make 1985 a very special year in the P.E.I. National Park.
