Ir is hoped that the musical and literary institutions of the town will this year be- gin the season early We note with plea-

sure that steps have been taken towards 4 continuance of the University Extension lectures. What about the Philharmonic Society and other eocieties existing for the good of thetown! The Philharmonic has not

hitherto been as successful, financially,as it

ought to havebeen. But it hasdone much to- ;

wards the education of musical taste In our citizens, and we trust that it will go on to reap the reward of the good work it has done. With a better appreciation of the classical music rendered by the Society the public will, no doubt, give the Society a stronger support. This is all that it needs. We feel sure that its members are, for the most part, ready and -villing to go on with their practices, and give their concerts, if only the citizens make it financially self- sustaining. Masic-loving people, who have means saould, therefore, generously assist the Society. Wehave no doubt that its Secretary, Mr. Horace Haazard, will now be glad to receive the names of persons ready to become honorary members on payment of five dollars— which will entitle them to receive two tickets for each of the concerts given “uring the season—and also the names of persons who desire to become active members, and thus improve their musical talents, as well as add to the So- ciety’s musical strength. In any case, the the Society should us be discouraged, but begin early. Its ultimate success is sure, if only it be persevering, vigorous and judicivus

— Mrs. Trumper. the lady referred to in the m memoriam lines published by Tuc Examiner to-day, was the third daughter of C Birch Bagster (formerly of Millvale, P. E. I.) and Susanna Maria Aitken, of Three Rivers, P. E. I. A husband and four children survive her. She deceased at Abbeyholm Harrogate, Yorkshire, and her remains were laid at rest in the Bagster-family ground in Abbey Park Cemetery, Loadon, England.

The Associated Press is authorized to state that both Mr. Gladstone and Sir Wil- liam Vernon Hareoart, his Chancellor of the Exchequer, are averse to the confer- ence discussing anything affecting the cur- mency of the British Empire. Mr. Glad- stone thinks that if anything is done to re- lieve the strain of the monetary system of India it ought to be effscted without agree- ment or conference with the United States authorities. Mr. Gladstone thinks that the conference will lead to nothing.

--For Tue Examiner we plead ‘‘not guilty” to the serious charge, preferred by a correspondent, of suppressing the facts in connection with the last heat in the race at Souris between Harry C. and Deertield. We reported the facts exactly as they oc- curred, There is no doubt that the owner of Deertivid suffered a misfortune and a wrong. Yet he failed to enter a protest at the right time, and he ran his horse almost all round the track, (hus, as we were in- formed, giving the Judges no option but to “distance” him; that is to say, Mr. Webster lost the race because he was not sutticiently well acquainted with the rules by which the Judges were governed. In common with every one upon the ground, Tae Examinen reporter sympathized with Mr. Webster, but felt that it was a case about which it was useless to say anything.

The British Consul at Athens is able to report that ‘‘ almost all the principal articles of British manufac- ture are covered by one or other of the conventiuns. The value of such articles imported from Great Britain into Greece in 1890 amounted to £684,817, besides £95,263 in the classes which are partly covered by the conventions, out of a total value of British imports of £1,329,492. Of the balance of £545,807, £187,272 are ac- counted for by the import of coal, which is free of duty It does not seem likely, therefore, that British trade will be much affected by the increased duties.” British diplomacy can secure a treaty from Greece much easier than from France or the United States, but unfortunately it ia not of the same value.

The Rifle.

The League team of ten men from the 82nd Battalion shot off yesterday for the cup won by them this season in the League rifle matches. The weather was unfavor- able for good shooting, with a heavy and unsteady cross wind from the right. Net- withstanding these hindrances, some excel- lent shouting was made. CUspt. G. Crock- ett won the cup, with 162 points, firing at the 600 yard range in tne darky At the first two ranges he made 90 out of a pos- sible 100 points, and his average was two points over inners The ranges were 200, 400, 500 and 600 yards, ten shots at each Following is the score :

Souris Races—A Complaint.

} Sin,—-We in this part of the Province l|awaited with interest the newspaper re- | ports of the trot which occurred on Souris Driving Park on Tuesday, 19'b Aug., and | were much surprised to find no reference | to the extraordinary injustice which char- | acterized the judges’ conduct on that occa- | sion; and, as the reporters of the Char- | lottetown papers were evidently unwilling | to see or at least make public, this outrage | it may not be uninteresting to your readers }to learn from a spectator the manner in which the judges performed the duties with which they were entrusted and the peculiar methods employed by them for the “elevation of the turf.” In the race | referred to (the 240 class) there were three starters, Harry C., owned by Con nolly, of Charlottetown; Deerfield, owned by Webster, Marie; and Nelson, well-known to the horsemen of King’s Co., owned, | believe, by John McLean, Esq , ae The first heat was fairly started and resulted in Deerfield winning easily, Nelson behaving very badly and Harry C. evident- ly being ‘‘not in it” with the speedy Deer- field, whose action was very much admir- ed. The second heat was a repetition of the first, and Nelson was then drawn, leav- ing Deerfield and Harry C. to finish the race, the former having al- ready two first hests to his credit. I will now describe the third heat, and I think the public will see that ‘‘outrage” is a mild term to use in describing the judges’ action. Deerfivid having won the previous heat, had, of course, the pole, and was also the score horse. Afterscoring afew times, what was our surprise to hear the word “go” given with Harry C. a length or more in advance of Deertield, the latter, as I said before, being the horse to score by, and surprise was not lessened when it was seen that Harry C. was instantly swerved— immediately after going under the wire— directly in front of Deerfield, taking the pole from him, and, of course, stupping his speed. As a consequence Deerfield went to pieces, and Harry C. had it all to him- self, Deerfield not steadying during the en- tire heat, and only saving his distance by sovae steady running on the home stretch. After the above you will be surprised to learn that the heat and the race were given to Harry C., Deerfield being distanced by the judges for running. Need 1 say that indignatiou was plainly manifested. That a starter might be found unjust or incom- petent enough to start horses in the posi- tion described was remarkable enough; but that three individuals could be found who would so utterly disregard the rules which were supposed to guvern them as to give a heat to the horse they cid under such circumstances, appeared inc mpre- hensible; but that, after viviating a a plain rule of the association, in aw irding the heat to Harry C they should also give him the race by using their discretion to

distance Deerfield for running, was certainly in harmony with their entire action. It is most unfortunate for Souris

track that anything so unfair should have happened in connection with it, but the managers have, ina sense, themselves to blame, for had they paid any attention to public opinion in this county, the individual who officiated as starter. would not have occupied a position on the judges stand, and then, perhaps, the public might have been spared the spectacle of a race being won merely by the exertions of starter, jockey aud jadges, and without any re- ference to the speed of the respective horses. I regret that the above described **crookedness,” was not earlier brought to the attention of the public, but 1 never for one instant supposed that the newspapers, which are thought to endeavor to prevent acts of unjustice by making these public which do occur, would so far neglect their duty as to fail to make public action, which happily is, | believe, almost unique on the part of officials on a respectable track. A Personal Explanation.

To the Editor of the Boston Herald :

You having published a dispatch from Halifax which, unexplained, does me a grave injustice, permit me to state that process was issued against mein Halifax by the Canada Atlantic steamship com- pany, upon a draft drawn by them upon me in iny official capacity as manager of the Boston, Halifax & Prince Edward Island steamship ling in Boston, and ac- cepted by me as manager. This draft, owing to embarrassment of the corporation which I then represeuted, remains unpaid. This was nota debt due by me to the Canada Atlantic steamship company in my personal capacity, but was a part of an un- settled accuunt due from one steamship line to the other.

The. animus which prompted the method of procedure against me need not be char- acterized publicly, as the facts are well understood among those familiar with the affairs of the two lines, and the matter will be properly adjudicated in the courts. Please vive this as prominent a position as you did the original article, and oblige, Yours truly, R. B. Garpner, Manager.

A Lecture Wanted.

S1r,—I understand that Mr. J. 8. Nelser, the affable clerk at Beer Bros. has returned from his visit to New York and other populous centres. As it will be impossible for Mr. N, to give the public full information about his many experiences, I would suggest that he hire a hall and entertain our people with an evening's speech. Mr. N’s. own view of the subject, I believe, will agree with this pro- posal.

TUESDAY, WEDSESDAY, THURSDAY AO) FRIDAY,

September 27ih, sth, 29th and 30th.

All Animals and Artic'es for Exhibition must ba entered at the office of the Secre tary, Cameron Block, on or before Saturday, 24th September.

The Exhibition Grounds and Buildings will bs open on Friday and Saturday, 23rd and 24th September, and ustil 2 o’clock in the afternoon on Monday, 26:h September, for the reception and arrangemeni of Exhibition Art cles

Exhibitors of bulky articles, requiring large space, should apply to the Secretary not later than 19th September.

Prize List, containing full informstion as to Rules, Regulations, etc., with Entry Forms, will be sent or givan to any person applying to the Secretary.

The Entry Bocks are now «pon, and eatries can be made at any time with the Secretary.

Grand Parade ef Prize and other Animals will take place on Friday, 30th sept., at If o’clock, a. m., sharp.
