The annual meeting of the Prince Edward Island Harness Racing Club will be held in the City Hall. City Building. Wednes- day. October 18 at 8 oiclock. A report of the season's activities will be presented by the gS9CTe' lary-treasurer. W. G. Gillespie. An election of officers for the ensu- ing year will also come before the meeting. It is hoped that as many breeders and horse owners as possible will attend so that their views can be ascertained. The past years Futurity 33995 held at the conclusion of Goodwill Races in September was one of the most successful in years.

The racing season of 1950 ended in a blaze of glory with record attendance at Sydney. Truro, N.S.. and Sussex. N.B.. and a good at- tendance at Riverside. P.E.l. Here are a few of the highlights. Over 4.000 spectators witnessed one of the most sparkling harness rac- ing mects in years at Truro Race- way" Monday afternoon. October 9. Ten dashes including a special two-mile trot and a mile and one- half free for all pace were raced. The fastest time of the meet was made in the free for all pace by Gay Law. owned by W. B. Moriarty and driven by Balbo Gould-2.09- 1-5. The second dash was one and one-half miles and was won by Victory Dale. owned by B. Cruikshank and driven by his son Buddy. in 3.20. Gay Law 2, Seven Up Direct 3. Single Streak 4. The two mile dash trot, believ- ed. to be the first at that distance ever held in the Maritimes. was won by that tough? reliable trot- ter Jennie Kalmuck (O'Donnell) 2.11 2-5. owned by Loine Letcher of Springhili. Quakers Boy (Con- roy) 2. Jim (Craig) 3. Baron (Daniels) 4. six other starters. The time was 4.44.

Cyril Smith of Hunter River continued his winning streak with Lady Azbner. owned by Claude Smith. Bradalbama. giving her a new mark of 2.15 I-5-four-fifths off her record lakcn recently. Norah Dale ( an) lowered her record to 2.18. Many admired the splendid effort of the two-year- old pacer Gallant Bobby (Car- roll). owned by C. L. Dauphinee of Halifax in winning the third event on the program from seven other trotters and pacers ll'l 2.21. Gallant Bobby is by The Great G. 2.02 1-2, that with few opportun- ities has sired some likely per- formers and was sold for a long price to head a stock farm in West- ern Canada. The three-year-old sister of Gallant Bobby. Nova G. (Carroll) was second toglsady Abner when she took her record of 2.15 1-5. The lightly regarded Hilda Mac. owned by Clayton Green. Emerald. and driven by E. Bernard. staged a real upset in the fifth dash by winning from a much more favored field which includ- ed such a rcdoubtable pacer as Ridgewood M. 2.11 3-5. time, 2.16- 4-5. A pacer that deserves to be featured is Aubrey Budlong. a consistent winner throughout the

season at ruro. He won the 4th race drive by Johnny Conroy. from Judd (Walker). Gallonage

(Cruikshank). Pearl Bumpas and Polly Reynolds. time, 2.11 3-5. which is two-fifths of I second off his record. Aubrey is owned by Scott Weeks. Port Wallis, who has seen him reduce his record year after year. After the races the horsemen were given a delicious chicken supper and a smoker by the management of Truro Race- way. and many were the expres- sions of good will towards them uttered by those present.

The Cape Breton Sports Centre grounds was packed by more than 4.000 racing fans Thanksgiving Il- ternoon. lured there by the ex- cellent racing program which in- cluded a 53.000 free for Ill. It was a fitting close to a splendid season's racing of 34 meets. In the first heat of the free for all that reliable pacing machine Vella La Vella showed in front in fast time - 2.08 3-5. with lola Henley 2. Crusader Chief 3, Jerry Lee Volo 4. This horse was purchased for a reported price of s3,500 at the Harrisburg sale last fall. We un- derstand he has competed in over 40 dashes this season and has been a big factor in every one of them. The P. J. Cadegan stable certainly showed up well in the above race with Ohio Hal. Crusader Chief and Cobblestone. A great deal of cre- dit goes to Ken MacDougall. who has been manager of the Sports Centre this season, for bringing harness racing to such a successful climax as that of last Monday. and we also wish to congratulate the management of Truro Raceway President. Fred Lahey. secretary. Carl MacKenzie. and the other di- rectors on their courage in con- tinuing the new venture this sea- son and bringing the standard of racing up so markedly as is evid- enccd by the time made over their improved track and the much larger attendances they have had.

Although mild speculation could be heard regarding the Hawks- Beaver clash at Saint John. the main topic was centred around Murph Chamberlain's Islanders who will swing into action against Halifax Saint Mary's at the Nova Scotia capital. Not since the de,vs when the Charlottetown Abbies dropped out of the senior hockey picture some 15 years ago. has hockey talk hit such a feverieh pitch in this quarter.

Although speculation is wide and varied as to the islanders chances againstglast year's M.S.H.L. cham- pions in tonight's opening of I long. hard 78-game schedule. the majority of local fandom opinion is anything but pessimistic. In fact it is almost the reverse. They might be. a shade t.oo optimistic.

Enthusiastic about the fine look- ing group 'of players that they have seen in practice sessions here for the past week under the di- rection of Murph Chamberlain, local fans may be inclined to ex- pect I'little too much from them in their initial start. One must remember that that they will be stacked up against one of the most seasoned clubs in the circuit - I club that has been benefiting from years of experience in "Big Four" competition - and that is some- thing that must not be taken light- l .

HALIFAX. Oct 18 (GP) - 'I'he re-shuffled Maritime senior Hockey Leuuc opens for business tomorrow night and there is no doubt the circuit will be watched with more interest than for many I year.

Charlottetown Islmders journey to this citadel city for the opener. mnrking the first time for the Is- land capital to the I senior squad since the old Big Fcur folded.

Besides re-entry of Charlotte- town. the league holds Ipeclal in- terest this year because it is the first tryout of the super-amateur circuit in Canadian hockey. The M. S. H. L. is one of the four cir- cuits in Canada that will compete for the C.A.H.A.'s "super trophy" instead of the Allan cup.

Islanders are replacing Amherst Ramblers. who found the going mo tough financially and bowed out last year. Their predecessors. OhIr- lottetown Abegwelts, competed against Moncton, Halifax and Truro in the days of the old Big Four whlch brought several Allan Cups to the Maritimes.
