With very great pleasure I have learned of the visit of Professor Saunders from the

Ottawa Experimental Farm and would be glad

to know that annual visits by him to our Province were possible. Much experience and benefit must result to our people from in yurse with one so thoroughly informed on ail matters relating to farming, and who, by his genial manner and lucid explanations at once inspired the respect, confidence and

appreciation of our farmers. Extracts from Professor Sat speeches and conversa- tions have greatly interested -me, and I am quite confident that his suggestions and ad- vice acted upon would be of great and lasting benefit, not only to farmers, but to the Pro- Vineet it large.

Then would our young men have less of that restlessness which too often results in their seeking other countries in which to labor. Then would we have fewer making the mistake of thinking shop keeping a more desirable calling ; then would ous Province rise to the high position which naturally it is fitted to occupy.

Has not Professor Saunders told us that in his travels from the Atlantic to the Pacific he has seen no better agricultural country; and las not our own experience in competing with our neighbors of the Provinces of Nova Brunswick, and of Quebec shown that in the products of the farm we are, at least, their equal. Then I would say push forward and be at the very head of the list of provinces, and while rejoicing that is a land of peace and plenty try and realize the great blessings and privileges which are ours ; the health-giving and in- vigorating atmosphere surrounding us, the rich, generous soil beneath our feet, and the

| best and most liberal form of government in

the wor'd. With all these we should, indeed, be prosperous and happy, and ever ready to thank God for his many great mercies to us.

With reference to the exhibit in the trot- ting park, I was very much pleased with the show of horses. This county has long given and a very good result, on the whole, is evident.

At the Exhibition grounds to-day, the show of cattle is not so large as I hoped it would _be but there were’several very$tine animals,and I have been told that the exhibit of cattle is above that of last year.

Within the walls I found much to be proud

ot. I never saw larger and finer apples than And the grain exhibit is excellent. As to fruit, 1 have not in all my travels seen better apples, ex- cept in California, and the other varieties of fruit are equally good. 1 have not been able to examine many of the exhibits, the time has been so short, but I think that the ex- hibition to-day is highly creditable to Prince County. For your kindly references to Mrs. Carvell, and your good wishes, I heartily thank you. I have very much pleasure in declaring this exhibition open.

The citizens of Summerside would avail themselves of the present occasion to offer you their felicitations on your appointment to the distinguished position of Lieutenant-Governor of Prince Edward Island, and to welcome you in your official capacity to the capital of Prince County.

In common with the inhabitants of the Province generally, most of us are familiar with your career and character for upwards of 25 years as a gentleman prominently identified with the commercial aud industria! interests of the country. In this respect your inter- course and influence have been not less bene- ficial than extensive.

Io the discharge of your duties as a legis- later of Canada we recognize in you a repre- sentative who entertained fair and patriotic views, and a well matured judgment on pub- lie questions, ever supporting measures of far-reaching and national significance.

Your elevation, therefore, to the highest office in the Province is buta fitting tribute to your merits as a citizen and public man.

We feel qute sure that your administration of the Government will be marked by strict impartiality on your part, and that the tradi- tions of Government House will, in no sense, be overlooked during your residence there.
