MONTREAL (GP) — The US. dollar closed Wednesday at a dis- count of 4 1-32 per cent in terms of Canadian funds, up. 1-32. Pound sterling $2.69 3-16, up 1-16.

TORONTO (CP) — Interest in speculatives waned on the» stock market Wednesday after five ses- sions of rising volumes .and prices. .

Profit-taking hit many of the big winners Tuesday and con- tinued today in slower trading. Final volume of 8,124,000 shares was down considerably from yes- terday’s 12,534,000.

Consolidated Halliwell was the leading issue Wednesday, adding four cents at 66 on a, turnover of 536,750 shares. New Hosco, the stock that jumped from 17 cents to $7.25, attracted moderate at- tention, losing five cents at $5.65

on 284,093 shares. Tuesday it traded 739,795 shares. The market generally was

firmer with western oil-s ahead while goldswere a few decimal points down. Base metals were the big losers. off more than a point. '

Golds were down mainly on the strength of a 1 point loss by Me- Intyre at 78. Most other changes were small. Senior mines were off among base metals. 'Frac tional losers were Consolidated Mining, International Nickel, and Noranda. 1

Calgary and Edmonton was off 1.1; among western oils.

The rest of the section however 3

was fairly strong with Pacific Pete, Canadian Atlantic Oil and Central. Del Rio among winners.

NEW YORK (Aw—A dividend slash by Ford Motor Company shocked Wall Street Wednesday and a previously higher stock market tumbled to a loss.

idend to 40 cents from 60 cents came in mid-afternoon. 'Almost simultaneously'with news of the dividend cut, Ford stock sold at 42%, a peak for this year, and up 3A; from the previous close.

It was immediately barraged with selling which drove it down to 39%, a loss of 27/3 on the day.

Other prices deteriorated along with Ford but there was no tre- mendous rush to unload. ,

The Ford performance was the latest chapter in a story which began in January 1956 when Ford previously a familyheld concern, offered its stock for the first time to the public at a subscription price of 641/2. It rose to a high of 70 early that year and sank to a low of 357/3 in 1957.
