MONTREAL (CP)—The Mont- Feal and Canadian stock ex- changes suffered one of its.worst declines this year in very quiet trading Thursday.

Canadian Dominion Sugar, which Wednesday cut its regular quarterly dividend in half, lost 5% at 18% in active trading. It hit a new low of 18 earlier.

Losses of more than a_ point ‘were common in most stock clas- sifications. Opening prices. were narrowly lower and they kept on falling all day. Some early gains were wiped out.

NEW YORK ‘AP) — The stock: market took its sharpest loss on Thursday since last November as profits were taken.

The space-age stocks toppled to losses running to 8 points or more. The key stocks which gov- ern the market averages dropped fractions to around 4 points.

Thiokol, the week's most active issue. dropped 7's points of the 18% it had’ gained in the three previous sessions this week.

The final volume, was 2,591,000 shares, compared with Wednes- day’s 2,909,000. For the second day not one speculative traded 100,000 shares. Only two of the five most active mines gained: Can-Erin lost 11 cents at $1.58 while Radiore was down 9 cents at $1.27.

Canada and pdminion Sugar had the sharpest industrial loss, off 5% at 19, trading ex-dividend. It touched a low of 18%. The com- pany Wednesday cut its regular 30-cent dividend in half. Hinde and Dauch dipped 5 at 56 as profit-taking swept away part of its gains of earlier sessions.

International Nickel and Nor- anda were the major losers in base metals, off a point each. In golds McIntyre was up 2 at 85 but few other golds gained.

The loss to western oils erased what little remained of the al- most eight-point gain of last week scored following a United States move exempting Canadian crude from import restrictions.

It marked the fifth straight day western oils lost- with seniors again the major losers. Pacific Pete and Calgary and Edmonton | each dipped *%4 while Great Plains was off % at 17% and Home B lost \%4 at 17%.
