VICTORIA DRIVING CLUB STAKE

Fourteen horses came to the wire for the feature event of the meeting and although Talugl proved to have too much pace for lhe others driver Earl Sample had to take him all out in chalking up his victory. Sent away on the first score for the first heat Lillie Bell paced around the leaders to go to the front at the second turn. She still had the lead as they came by the stands and hit. into the beckstretch the second time but Talugi etarted to move up from there with Ann Clegg- doing likewise and the battle to the wire was between the pair of them with Talugi having a two length marlin at the wire.

It was all Talugi during the second mile. Ann Clegg tested him in the quarter pole before having to take back and from there home Talugl- was never in any great danger as the race develop- ed lnto e battle between the win- ner and Ann Clegg but again the Clegg mare couldn't make the trade.

Taking the lead right from the word Kavolo raced to the front of the field of five pacers to lead them up the backstretch. True Hal seeking to take over raced on the outside right past the stands but was forced to take back. As they went down the backstretch the second trip Kavolo, Royal At Law. Alcyone and Anti Aircraft went to si-multaneous drives. At (he three quarter pole Anti Ail":'£|it had moved up from fifth to third. At the top of the stretch he was m second place to Kavolo who had taken over the lead and in the sensational stretch drive the Aircraft managed to get his head in front as they paced under the wire.

Scoring by Kavolo for the sec- ond heat after the Aircraft had failed to get his field do\vn Kavolo led the field away only to lose the rail to True Hal at. the first turn; at the half Ant-l Aircraft had moved up on the outside of True H81 to take over at the first turn and from there on was never headed as Royal At Law came through in the stretch to test the winner with Kavolo being third, Alcyone fourth and True Hal drop- ping back to fifth position.

True Hal was drawn for (he third and final heat and again the fans received a surprise as Kavolo. handled by Roy Bainet and a decided factor in the race all day paced off with the heat. Royal At Law got off flying i.) take the field down stretch and around 'to the half on 1.07. Rapidly closing the gap that a bad start had accounted for Antl Aircraft and Kavolo started moving very fast up the back- stretch. Royal At Law, Anti Alr- craft and Kavolo were closely bunched as they hit the top of the stretch. Halfway down the Air- craft showed slightly ln front but tn the last few strides Kavolo again came on to Win the heat by a nose, Royal At Law third and Alcyone fourth.

Just Flicks, Harold Cudmore's great little pacer took the field of nine horses away on the third score for the first heat. June Morning made an early bid for the lead but was forced to tuck in, came on again in t-he stretcn to get up on even terms at the half end finally took over at the turn. Roy Shelburne starting to move up fast made it a thrilling three horse battle as June and Flicks continued their stirring battle. At the top of the stretch a blanket could have covered all three with June Morning in front. Just, Flicka second and Shelburne third and the remainder closely bunched a couple of strides back.

Sent away fast in the second host Roy Shelburne had a three length lead on the field as they hit into the backstretch the first trip around but Romeo pacing very fest overtook him at the upper turn to go lo the front. At the half it was Romeo. Roy Shelburne.

Shirley Tern-pie and June Morn- ing leading the way and in the stretch Romeo Shelburne and June were closely packed but Romeo outfooted them to the wire to win by a couple of lengths. Roy Shelburne second, June Morning third, Shirley H. Temple fourth and the remainder pretty well strung out.

. But it was in the third heat the big upset came. Romeo led at the half but a disastrous break at the first turn forced him to take back. Here Miss Knox started to show in the picture and halfway up (he backstretch had paced into the lead. There was no heading her. Roy Shelburne, Romeo. who made two breaks in the mile and the remainder of them all tried to head her but young Joe Hennessey piloted her home in front with Lady Rose. driven by Dave Wise- ner coming like a storm in the stretch to wind up second with Shelburne third. June Morning cropping back to fourth. Romeo frfth and Shirley H. Temple, Reu- ben Lee and Just Flicks finishing in that order.

The three heat winners, Miss Knox. ‘Romeo and June Morning hammered away at each other hammer and tongs in the extra heat but again Miss Knox out- paced them. Taking the lead on (he backstretch the second time around dri-ver Hennessey opened up a two length lead and flashed under the wire with that much to spare with Romeo moving past June Morning in the stretch to capture the runner-up position.

Three horses. Quick Lick. Tiny Budlong and Maudlne Budlong figured l-n a dangerous looking mixup in the first heat o-f the Stake Race as all three went dorwn in a tangle of sulkies halfway up the backstretch but luckily both

drivers and horses escaped free from serious injury although Maudlne Budlongks bike was

smashed to pieces in the mishap.
