Atmost Fatat.—On Monday last during the progress of the Lot 65 tea party, a little girl nine years old, the daughter of John Carregher, Hope River, almost met death by drinking water from a bucket in which was a quantity of prussic acid. It appesrs that a silver-plater, who had plating some church ornaments in the kitchen, had left this bucket containing a prussic acid wash behind him. The little girl coming in a short time afterwards, went to the bucket and tock «a drink, thinking the water was pure from the well. She immediateiy became deadly sick. As the solution was extremely poisonous it was only by inetant vomiting that the chiid was saved.

A Botp Tuisr. — Yesterday afternoon a woman living on Dorchester Street secured the services of George Brown, son of (the late **‘Backley” Brown, to carry a jar for her to the brewery, where she was going to get some beer for a member of her family who was un- well. George carried the jar along all right until he ar:ived ia the vicinity of Rochford Square, when he comp!ained of feeling tired

and asked permission to rest a while. Permission was granted, While George was resting he said to the woman,

“There's a black spot on your face.” Naturally enough the wowan put her hand up to her face to clean it. She held her purse in her hand, and while she was in the act of wiping her face George snatched the purse and made off. The purse con- tained upwards of $15. The woman re- ported her loss to the police, who are on the track of the bold thief. Brown is about sixteen years of age.

Was Daigle Murdered ?

Outrages at Buctouche

THE AUTHORITIES NOTIFIED.

Moncton, Aug. 24.

A series of outrages are reported from Buc- touche, Kent Co., following tne drowning of Captain Daigle who, it was believed, was bringing a cargo ot smuggled liquor from St. Pierre. First a young man named Sawyer notified the authorities that he bad found a quantity of smuggled {!quor, and was set upon and beaten. Ocher outrages follewed. A statement of the affiirs has been sent to the authorities. There is a suspicion that Cap- ‘ain Daigle was not drowned, but foully mur- dered before being put in the water; the ob- ject of the marder being robbery, as Daigle must have had a large sem on his person.

The suspension of the shipping firm of George Tweedy & Co., London, principal operators of the North Atlantic Trident Line of steamships between this port and London, Swansea, Avonmouth, Bristol and Rotterdam, is announced. An Itmportant Resolution. Lonvon, Aug. 24. Stuart Reundele, member for Montgom- eryshire, chairman of the Welsh party, will introducs in parliament a bill fixing a date after which no vested interest can be created in Welsh dioceses. The measure is forerunner to a bill disestablishing the Church in Wales.

Death of an Islander.

Orrawa, Aug. 24. James Hughes, of Charlottetown, who fell from a window bere during a fit of somnam- bulism, died yesterday morning. He was engaged here in the Department of Agrical- tnie. The body will be sent home for inter- ment.
