It was in this com- mand, which was rewarded by both promotion and knighthood, that he ) won still more ; the appreciative esteem |of the then Viceroy, Lord Dufferin, who was heard to express his belief that White was the ablest military officer he had ever met. When ina few years more the appointment of commander-in-chief of the Indian army fell vacant, Lord Dufferin’s sup- port, it is said, availed much to secure the coveted distinction for Sir Geore White. The selection caused some heart-burning, for it meant, the super— seding of several offiers believed by many to be quite as fit for the post. But White got it, and did well with it. He was greatly aided by his intimate acquaintance with Indian military ad- ministration ; he showed much sound sense, and was always personally pop—
