RE: Water Damage & Possible Mold in Blanchard Hall- D wing

October 31, 2003

After concerns were made to this office, a site assessment was made at Blanchard Hall on

October 29, 2003 by this office.

It was apparent there had been significant amounts of water leaking during the days prior in D- wing on the 3" floor of Blanchard Hall. The hallway had buckets to catch dripping water, some ceiling tiles were removed while others were in place and wet. There was a bad odor i in the hallway that is sometimes associated with wet or flooded carpeting.

_ Roonffnad had water leaking into buckets in the living room, there were obvious water stains on the ceiling and a hole were water had dripped through. Apparently, water leaking into this room eventually flooded into a room below on the second floor on two different occasions. Room had also had water leaking from the ceiling into one of the bedrooms, there were

water stains along one of the seams.

All water leaks must be investigated and repaired to prevent potential heath hazards. The source of the leak must be identified before repairs to ceilings are made. Potentially harmful organisms such as mold may result from reoccurring water damage to building materials.

It is recommended that porous building materials, such as gyp-rock, insulation and ceiling tiles be discarded and replaced if they have been repeatedly saturated or have signs of water damage. Carpeting that has been saturated should be cleaned. It is very important that carpets are thoroughly and quickly dried afterwards, otherwise, it can contribute to the problem. It is sometimes necessary to discard if it cannot be properly cleaned / dried and if smells remain.
