To know one person who is posit- ively to be trusted will do more for man's moral nature — yes, for his spir- itaal nature—than all the sermons he hes ever heard or ever can hear.

The purposes, objects and resolu- tions of life are the perfectly formed links, and the fulfilling of these aspir- ations is the linking ot them together, which forms the useful chain.

Honors soften fatigue. It is easy riding in a gilded and embossed saddle. Atlas, while he susfains the world upon his shoulders, is himself sustained by the admiration which his feat excites.

Plenty and indigence depend upon the opinion every one has of them ; and riches, no more than glory or health, have no more beauty nor pleas- ure than their possessor is pleased to lend them.

When we hear people ready to speak of the faults of others, or to censure them as holding scandalous errors, or io lessen the wisdom and piety of those about them, that themselves may seem the wiser and better, this is a sign that they have a vain religion.

A wite’s love is the golden chain which unites her to her husband. It has a thousand delicate links, forged by sympathy, self respect and mutual con- tidence; sever but one of them and the chain is as completely broken as though a hundred were destroyed.

Gone.

There is probably no word in the Eng- lish language more expressive, more heart-touching, than the simple word, “gone.” It is asmall word, yet hidden ander it is an intense meaning deeper than one thinks until called upon to use the word in reference to his own logs.

Robert Hall thought the word “ tear’ the most beautiful and expressive in our language; but has not the word gone much the same pathetic sentiment ? The loved and cherished of the heart and home—perhaps a dearly beloved mother or father, a brother or sister, has passed away. Noexpression could be more touching to the heart than the word gone—gone out of our sight and home forever. With it in this case the word tear is anear kindred. When we have seen friends laid in their narrow house, gone expresses the feelings of our hearts better than any other word. We can hardly conceive of the cause of a tear without the knowledge of some- thing gone.

Does the heart weep over the grayes ef loved ones ? Then something surely is gone. Does it mourn over wasted time and opportunities? Then some- thing is gone. Abundantas is our lan-
