“When Mr. Langworthy said he would take my homs and put my poor husband and children out without a roof over ‘their beads, I‘ hated him. 1h all my life I had never done a wicked thing. I knew I could not appeal to his hard heart. So I.t0id him I would take the baby and. leave it on the steps of the orphanage.

"But when I went back up to the attic and saw the poor little thing lying there so tiny and helpless, I couldn't do It. I thought of its poor mother downstairs, probably dying without the'carc of c. doctor, and I couldn't beer to take the only thing ah had to live for from her."

“It was just like a. voice had whispered in my ear and told me to take Mr. Langworthys baby to the orphanage instead of the Peters baby. I hated him so much that I didn't seem to think there was any wrong in it at the time. He deserved it. All his life he would live in the same house with the daughter of the bank robber from the orphan- age, and he would think the child was his own."

Sugar pressed her hands to her breasts to still the wild beating of her heart. But no one interrupted. lvfrs. Simms’ hands fluttered in her ap.

"Mr. Langworlhy had driven to town and wasn't back yet. No on: was in the house but. Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Langworthy and mc- I picked the baby up and hurried w the attic and put it beside the little girl in the crib. They were as alike as two peas in a pod.

"Then I picked the Peters baby up and took it downstairs. When

Mr. Langworthy came home and

went in to see his child I almost fainted for fear he would know the

difference when he picked the baby

up. But he didn't. Then I knew what I was going to do. He asked me if everything was ready to take the baby away and I said yes.

“At four o'clock in the morning I sneaked out with his baby. He was waiting for me down the road so no one would hear us drive away. There was a. road nobody ever used that went through the woods. No one saw-us from the time we left the farm until we got back. l-le waited for me in the grove by the orphanage while I put the baby on the steps. I stayed two weeks long- er and took care of the Peters baby. Then he gave me the $5000 and I left. ‘first wasthe last time I have seen or heard anything about the children until now.”

Mrs. Slmms raised her hand in a solemn oath:

“As God is my judge I am telling the truth."

Then she fell back in her chair- All life seemed to have left her.

“I behave you," Mother Frlddle said quietly. “Sugar, dear, will you get Mrs. Simms a glass of water and put a cold cloth on her head? She seems ill."

Mother knew it was best for Sugar 0o have something to do. She seemed too stunned for action, but she got up wcodenly and crossed to the bathroom.

Jane Lee had not moved from her position among the pillows. When Mother went over to her bed she realized that she had fainted again. The shock had been too great for her. The old maid went out to find Eurasia and tell her to get the doc- tor. Jane Lee must have medical at- tention.

When she returned Sugar was on her knees by the old nurse's chair bathing her face.

"Take Mrs. Simms to the bedroom across the hall." Mother took com- mand of the situation. “We'll have the doctor take a look at her too. You must rest here, at least for the night, Mrs. Simms. You've been under a terrible strain." -

The nurse tried to get up, but fell back into her chair- It wok Sugar and Mother both to get her into the bed. Miss Fkiddle hurried Hack to Jane Lee and left the nurse in Sugarls care. ‘

The woman closed her eyes again.

"You are Zauic Lou. Your name is Zsnie Lou Langworthy."

Sugars head whirled dizaily as she realized" that was the truth. Why-Zanle Lou wasn't Zanie Lou at all. She. Sugar Friddle. W88 Zanie Lou. She asked breathlessly:

"What was the other baby's name, Mrs- Simms? Do you know "

"Patsy Ann. Patsy Ann Peters. Her mother named her the night before she was born. She wanted a little girl."

“It's a lovely name," Sugar said. repeating it to herself. "Patsy Ann. If my sister will lei; me, I want to be called Patsy Ann. We can't ask Zanie to give the name back after all these years."

An hour before she had called her mother. In all the world, Sugar thought, there could never be a stranger story. But surely ii; must be about at an end. Nothing else could happen. Gently she stroked the old nurse's head.

"What was my mother, Mrs. Langwcrthy like?" she asked then. and felt that she could never learn enough about her.

“She was the sweetest woman that ever lived." Mrs. Simms smiled for the first time. “You should be proud to be her daughter!’

Then Sugar remembered the big oil painting of a lovely dark ring- letecl lady in crincline in the lib- rury downstairs. Zanie Lou had said it was her mother. But it was her own dear little mother. Sugar realized with a singing in her heart that almost drowned the misery of the dreadful clays she had been through.

She was almost a princess after s11, sugar thought, as she remem- bered the story she had built up in her childish imagination. Anway, she was the daughter of one of the wealthiest an doldesl. families in the Slate of Virginia.

But there was one thing Sugar would be most thankful for to the longest day she lived: that Cart had loved her as Sugar middle. And that he had asked her to marry him when she was a little nobody, in her cell in the county jail. '

It had been Sugar he loved, not Zanle Lou Iangworihy. the heiress. She raised her head proudly.
