The electric light works which supply the electricity for the Quebec lights are situated at the foot of Montmerency Falls, a dis- tance of about seven miles from the city, and the power that drives them is furniah- ed by the fall itself. The Quebec Chronicle thus describes the works: ‘The visitors then walked to the foot of the hill to see the works of the company, which adjoin the Montmorency wills The motive power of the dynamos that furnish the lights is not derived from the same feeder as that of the saw millis, but is supplied by a new iron pipe 260 feet in length, formed of 1} inch boiler plates. Atits head this pipe is four feet and a half in diameter and at its discharge twenty-four inches. Tho water which it conducts has a head of 165 feet. The water falls upon a turbine wheel of 21 inches diameter. This wheel is one of the mest remarkable of its kind ever made. Notwithstanding its comparatively small size, it is capable of furnishing 1 125 horse power, and makes 620 revolutionsa minute. It was manufactured to order by Messrs Wiison & Co., of Picton, Ontario, and is cast in one piece, without a single bolt or} any thing of the kind. The eighty | lights now in operation in_ the city are furnished by less than one hundred horse power, only two dynamos of fifty lights each being used for the purpose with plenty of power to spare. It will thus be seen that the present pipe and turbine wheel are capable of furnish- ing more than ten times the number of lights now required, while the number of similar pipes that could be fed by the Falls is practically unlimited. The dynamos were started at the Falls yesterday after- noon in presence of the visitors, all of whom manifested a very great interest in the undertaking.

It is expected that in the early part of next year, the eclectric motive power from the Falls of Mortmorency will be applied to several printing cfices and factories in this city.”

The Sea Serpent is Dead.

W. W. Hollister, Jr.. bas discovered the veritable sea serpent atlast, While wan- dering down by the San Augustin creek, where it empties into the ocean, on the Sants Anita ranch, the young gentleman discovered a singular looking head half buried in the sand. With the assistance of a vaquero the remains of the creatures were exhumed and found to resemble strikingly the sea serpent of tradiion. Its h ad was from 24 to 3 feet wide, ard about 4 feet inIength. The body is about 30 feet long, having flukes at the tail and some thing like a shark. The body is perbaps 24 feet in diameter in width, and afoot or more in thickness. The creature has 13 testh on each side in the upper jaw, each tooth being about the size of a pepper box. The front teeth appeared to be badly worn or broken, as if the ‘‘sarpint” had heen epgaged in a desperate «battle, or perhaps was dying of old age. Mr. Hollister will bring his treasure trove to Santa Barbara #8 soon as he gets him alldug out of the sand, and our scientists may then have an opportunity to decide to what order of creature he belongs. —Santa Barbura Inde- pe ident. q
