A Legal Romance.

LONDON, Oct 25.—A case was Saal cluded yesterday that established the | failibility of human evidence in the} matter of identity. In the latter part | of March last, Miss Emma Dasb, while | promenading the pier at Brighton, was| accosted by a man, who introduced | himself as Onpt McDonald. This} strange acquaintance proved agreenble | and changed into friendship, which | rapidly r pened into love. Atter a few! days ardent courtship, Miss Dash con-

ck | sented to become the captain s wile. | They were married at St. James Church on April 4, and they had their

breakfast at the Clarendon Hotel. They started on their honeymoon, but one tine moraing Capt. McDonald went out to return no more, and the bride re turned diseconsolate to Brighton. Months passed on, when one day a lady who had been present at the marriage recognized the errant captain disguised asa butcher in the Brightoa market. This was told to the bride, who also re cognized him, and he was arrested. The butcher asserted that his name was James Malcolm, and that he neither was nor did he know Capt. Me Donald. Hie denied that he had married Miss Dash, and said. that he hada wife at home to whom he had been married for years. He was charged with bigamy, but when the case came to trial, owing to the conflict of witnesses, the jury disagreed Yester day he was tried again.and the evidence was equally irreconcilable. All the Witnesses preseut at the marriage, in- cluding the clergyman who periormed the ceremony,swore most uphesitatingly that James Malcolm,the meat salesman, was the Capt. McDonald who married Miss Dash. The manageress of the Clarendon Hotel, recollected distinctly Capt. MeDonald staying at her house and having his weddiog breakfast there. She swore most emphatically that the prisoner was not that captain. So wit- ness after wilness was called, and each contradicted the other. Witnesses swore that the accused could not be easily mistaken for Miss Dash’s lover, | ‘ up covering the| period of¢the courtship, marriage and | brief honeymoon, but the testimony of | the clergyman who performed the cere- | mony turned the seule. The jury, after | a lengthy absence fiom the court found | the prisoner guilty, und he was at once} sentenced to seven years penal servi- tude.
