About The Gem
The Gem (formerly The Netted Gem), the student newspaper of the University of Prince Edward Island, was founded on November 3, 1983. It was the successor to the UPEI Sun. U.P.E.I. news, news from other universities, sports, humour and feature articles were all printed in The Gem. Issues of concern included student loans, high tuition fees and unemployment. The Gem also protested against smoking, sexism and conditions in the Third World. Photographs were printed in every issue of the paper. The name of the paper was changed from The Netted Gem to The Gem in January of 1986.
