About Gigmanag
Gigmanag began publication in 1976, aiming to defend the rights and preserve the culture of the Metis on P.E.I. It printed local and national news, particularly reporting on the activities of the
Prince Edward Island Association of Metis and Non-Status Indians, and on the organization which supplanted it in 1978, the Native Council of Prince Edward Island. Gigmanag also printed poetry,
articles on Micmac history and culture, legends, a children's puzzle page and, occasionally, recipes. During the first half of the 1980s, many articles were published regarding the negotiation of aboriginal rights under the new constitution. Throughout Gigmanag's publishing history, there have been occasional gaps in its publication where funding problems have occurred.
